We just got a live video feed (?facebook live? - I don't really know as I was looking over several shoulders to see a phone) of our food being served in Victoria with a good continuous line of people getting fed.
    That is badass Dan!

Just looks amazingly well organized and wonderful. Where do all the volunteers stay?

The core people stay on site in trailers. The rest of us have to figure it out. Fortunately we have @20stone 2 miles from the site.

Other folks are allowed to camp in the parking lot where they are set up, sleep in their vehicles, etc.

In San Antonio most of the teams have their own trailer with beds. There were also some RVs donated to the cause. Fortunately they set up less than 10 min from my house.

  • I've donated to OBR several times, (for a cool sticker on my cooler) including this time when the initial email came out. For those who wish to, get on their mailing list.

Fortunately, there hasn't been anything in my area to deploy to, but looks rewarding.

    Good on you guys!

I helped one of the competition cooks trim and rub briskets and get 5 of them on his pit.  Numerous pits also have briskets on them - about 500 pounds total. In return for my help I was given some brisket rub pork rub that he has used to win a bunch of competitions.
    500 lbs?  How cute.

We banged out 1000lbs of pork loins and 3500lbs of butts (and I use "we" very broadly).

On a less dickesh note, my arm is about to fall off from slicing loins. I am old and soft.

It is amazing. 50,000 meals today. They have 100 core volunteers that are staying in trailers, camping, or even sleeping in cars. A few got hotels. Many of the volunteers like us stay in people's homes. @20stone lives 2-3 mikes from the site and let's just say that it is far less rustic than car camping. Way better wine too. We are glad to help and we have banged out some serious hours in pretty intense conditions, That said, we are doing 4-6 hours a day then drinking nice wine and eating great food in the AC. Some of these guys are hard core. We are soft to the core but glad to help where we can

We're in the periphery of this so we're lightweights by comparison.

Thanks to all for your volunteer efforts.  I know every helping hand is valued (even one-wingers).
I am impressed with the way OBR can get such an organized function up and smoothly operating in such short order.  Definitely on the receiving end of donations.
Thanks @The Cen-Tex Smoker for the behind  the scenes insights as to their operation.  Makers one appreciate their great works even more.

@20stone making things happen today. We are right across the street from the Metropolitan Club in downtown Houston. This is a very nice fitness club right in the heart of some of the largest corporate buildings in downtown Houston. Our lead at OBR was saying they really needed places for the on site people to be able to shower and get out of the heat for a while. Jones said "let me see what i can do". He walked over to the Met and told them what we were up to and what we needed. The manager of the club called him back within an hour and gave them access to the club to shower and use the facilities. I knew they didn't stand a chance when he went in to ask but it was nice to see that they didn't put up a fight at all. People helping people down here in H-Town this weekend.
Stellar work right there. And mighty nice gesture on the Met's part.

I should mention that wrangling the shower deal started in an air conditioned space and was completed on the phone while sipping a cocktail.  Hardly Medal of Honor-worthy, but I am glad I could help out.

In the limited amount of time I've spent with him at brisket camp, I can believe that. Good guy.

5:30 AM shift tomorrow to pull and pack all the butts for lunch. I figure we get the rest of the day off if we show up to process 500 butts and 250 turkey breasts as the sun comes up on a Sunday. Should be done by 8 or 9. Then a nap, boozy brunch, second nap, then happy hour (at 2:30 or so).

I donated today. Gave one my buddies a guilt trip and made him donate. And shared on the book of faces. Also @20stone is kind of a jerk. That's probably reason why we get along .  that and our common mutual love for Hall & Oates.
