Wow...so shocked and saddened to read this. I haven’t been that active lately with my move and other life’s issues taking all my focus. He was one of my favorite characters on here and I enjoyed his commentary and will miss interacting with him. Had the pleasure of getting to meet Brent at the last 2 BBS. Just a down right awesome person. Huge loss to this forum for sure.
Heartfelt condolences to Nicole and family. -
I am not a prolific poster, but I am a voracious reader, and I have nothing but respect for Dr. Murphy from what I have seen on the forum. I am sorry that I never had the good fortune to meet him. He was obviously a good friend to many here and a great loss to his family, friends, and the forum. My he rest in peace.XL BGE in San Jose, CA. Genuine. Always positive. Always had a smile on his face. Genuine. Class act. The good Lord took a great one from us. Only met him a few times but was always welcoming and genuine. Did I mention that Brent was genuine?

The general sentiment on here that this sucks is correct, but I cannot express to a sufficient degree how badly it does suck. I met Brent over 20 years ago, when my then 5 year old son was assigned to a youth soccer team that Brent agreed to coach. Ironically, he had just moved into the same subdivision as us and I met him at the neighborhood pool. I introduced myself to him and he said "Nice to meet you, I need an Assistant Coach, practices are Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00, see you there..." and so, there I did go. That was Brent, direct, but damn politely so, and with that dang smile, how could I say no to that? THAT was the start of our friendship. We shared a passion for youth soccer and running, and spent many, many hours on the soccer fields of Cobb County, coaching kids and we also spent many, many hours running, training together for 10K's, Half Marathons and finally full Marathons, of which we ran three full marathons together. The world is indeed a lesser place without him.
Brent, my brother, this sucks, and it hurts, and it puts tears in my eyes, but I can only hope and pray you are at peace, and pray Nicole and your boys are given the strength they need to endure and carry on. Love you brother...

Brent attracted quite a crowd. -
I can’t remember which of his family said it, but it sums up Brent nicely. He only wanted to help people.
One one of his sons said, “he taught me respect. No matter who it is, treat them with respect.”
that’s a pretty good summary of the man. -
booksw said:I have been on this forum for years and one thing I have always resented about it is what a "boys club" it is. I have a handle that doesn't make it obvious that I am a wife and mother, rather than a dude, and it used to really irritate me that Brent would always refer to me as 'brother'. It was bad enough that I felt left out of the club, but when he just assumed I was a guy, that was preposterous to me. That is, though, until I met him. I was all ready with my indignant attitude- ready with a 'gotcha' and he totally disarmed me with his self deprecating humor and that 'signature smile'- so true! Nichole good heartedly rolling her eyes in the background... Since then I have looked forward to his calling me brother. And he has made a point of it- with a wink and a smile. OK now I'm crying so that's all. Thanks @northGAcock for the message- I am happy to be a part of Brent's boys club, and oh so sad that he is gone.

Yesterday at the service, all I did was meet the "other side" of Brent. The rest of his and Nicole's family, the employees of his practice their spouses and his life long friends.
The place was crowded with wonderul people, all kind and genuine, all there to do their best to comfort Nichole, and say good bye to one of the best people that has ever stood on this earth.
It says a lot about a man by the company he keeps.
The BGE community was well represented, we did our best respectfully, cleaned up nice, and helped where ever we could.
Brent's Mini Max Big Green Egg was brought in and was shown, along with his t shirts and medals he had collected from participating in various athletic events.
A big screen was in the room which shown his life filled with fun moments shared with family and friends.
The Joshua Tree by U2 was featured along with several other U2 songs from other albums in support of the images and video clips.
Brent was a close friend to many people. He shared his life with them. He shared it with us.
Nobody ever had to tell Brent to be kind, to be generous, to be thoughtful, to be a better humanitarian, be a better father, be a better husband, to have a good time, to push himself, to become more motivated, or to live life to its fullest.
The only thing we had a chance to say was "slow down" or "be careful."
I can not measure the influence he and Nichole has made upon our lives. As like many others in this community, I do a lot of charity work for humanitarian causes and would often confide in Brent my successes and failures, along with the frustrations I met and faced.
He always kept it in perspective. He would remind me, we as humanitarians, are not in this for ourselves. We are in it for those we can help.
This is what kind of friend I had with Brent.
I have just one story I will share.
Years ago, I had a rare chance to help Brent out, it was nothing I thought to be significant, just something you do for friends.
He knew Suzy and I are into wine. It is one of many faults I have. As an act of appreciation, he bought me a very nice bottle of Cab.
When I say very nice, I mean "home freaking run" bottle of wine.
He told me he felt somewhat intimidated buying wine for me. I was speechless. I could never imagine this man as being intimidated by anything.
That bottle still rests in my wine fridge, as it will for the rest of my life. I will always have that smile Brent has shared with so many, on my face every time I open that fridge to pull one out. My friends ask about it, when they see it. I very gently and calmly explain it is the only wine in my collection that is off limits. Touch it, and die.
Even in the little things in life, he did for others, they always seemed thoughtful, heartfelt, kind, and definitely over the top.
I will close this with the last words Brent ever spoke to me, and a phrase he so heartfully meant to everyone he shared it with, everytime he said it.
I will use it in full sincerity for him:
"Love you brother."
