I think the tone of the forum has changed.  In my short time here, I think increased anger and disrespect are the real problem - you don't see that in posts about hamburgers, so it does mainly come out in political posts.   But it's how people express themselves that is the problem, not the topic.

I would venture that things have gotten more heated since early November 2016.  There was a good bit of back-and-forth leading up to the day of reckoning but once the results were in it became a whole new landscape.
Perhaps the high drama will ease up in time but given the mercurial nature of the country's leadership that is problematic at best.

I find the problem with the political threads is word count.  The posts are soooo looooonnnnggggg.

oh we can make angry hamburger posts a thing.

I agree, we can now converse with the world while sitting on the can.  IRL I refuse to have a conversation while doing that.

Can we discuss the "Instant Pot Sous Vide" conspiracy ....just when I was ready to cook something for 72 hours in hot water, I discovered I really needed it in less than an hour....I've become Bi Polar

Wait! This cooking forum has threads that are politically based? Say it ain't so! :anguished:
Hey John @johnincarolina & Brent @bgebrent I'll stop using emojis 100% if the political AND CHRISTIAN (& other religion) BASHING THREADS & innuendos cease to exist. So ummm yeah, pretty sure I'll be safe to leave this here.
    :giggle:
I agree, if all political or religion posts got nuked immediately this wouldn't bother me a bit.

I've never started a political thread and I rarely post on them, so I have no problem with them going away.

But I must say I find them educational at times as I - as a centrist who votes about 70% republican - navigate the waters between my conservative coworkers and my liberal in-laws.

If someone votes 70% of the time with one side or the other can they still truly be called a centrist?

Slowly cooked in a pie on the BGE.

I value your political insight. I may be the only one, but I will miss it should you actually follow through with your threat. I am thinking you would spontaneously combust, should you not post a political point again.
Haven't started a thread in weeks.  Neither has Nola by the way.

But I appreciate the sentiment.  On the rare occasion when there's good discussion of the politics, I appreciate the give and take as well.

And we are off...........Nola has been busy with Mardi Gras, I am sure, and if that was a choice, for me, the forum loses.
I don't care if politics are on the agenda, I go to them last, after checking out the great cooks, and everything else.
The views of anyone, in here, will not influence me. I may agree on some points, others not so much. I am sure others are like me, in that respect.
As long as we keep it cool, and not allow it to spin out of control, to juvenile name calling, I am ok. When crossing that threshold of respect for one another, I would Buffalo it immediately if I were able. Any conversation or point to be made has no value whatsoever after it spirals down to that.

Sadly in the US these days, I think the answer to that is a resounding Yes.

Oh, I completely agree with @bgebrent here. I don't read the political threads any more because I know exactly where they are headed. The entertainment for me is to see how long they last before they get buffaloed. Wasn't trying to stir up trouble, just to get a laugh.
I'd love to see the day that this forum only uses liberal and conservative to describe how much rub to apply.
Nobody says you have to read the political threads.  It's a free country brother.

I've never really understood the bitching.  I'm more sympathetic to the argument that the conversations have just grown stale.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that was born with the gene that allows me to:

     - Ignore threads in internet forums that do not interest me

     - Ignore threads in internet forums that I might find offensive

     - Not feel compelled to participate in internet forum threads that a) may not interest me or b) may offend me just to say that "this thread sucks and/or offends me".

     - Remember what I learned in kindergarten many decades ago - that "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me".

I've never understood the kvetching either. I don't have exact numbers but I'm guessing there are a few dozen new threads started each day. There are a dozen or so long-lived threads that garner new posts each day.

Out of a couple hundred new threads each week there may be one or two threads that only a handful of "the usual suspects" actually (and willingly) participate in but somehow that minute fraction of threads is responsible for making the forum "suck". Really?

I agree with @JohnInCarolina about the staleness and find myself sharing with @jeffwit that the entertainment in many of "those" threads is to see how long they live before being gored by the buffalo.

This place would be a pretty boring place without all the OT threads... It may be just a perception but I feel like the tone has changed recently.  Insults are way too frequent lately.  I do not remember seeing that other than the Stike/Rubmyrock incident a few years ago.  People are way too emotional nowadays...

I think a lot of folks just take some of the remarks way too seriously.  Part of the issue may be that there is a good mix of people who have met in person and those who haven't, I don't know.  Whatever - I'm happy to let this stuff go for the foreseeable future.  I have Butt Blasts to plan...

LOL, I use both an Instant Pot and an immersion circulator (sous-vide).  The texture of a piece of meat cooked sous-vide and in a pressure cooker are way different.  There may be a few exceptions but you cannot achieve the same results with both.  They are two different techniques.

  • How about for every 1 political post or comment you gotta post 2 cooking posts or comments?  And no one has to read any thing they don't want to read -- politics, food, coolers, armaments -- what ever!

That's because of the public political arguments where any assertion is not countered with another assertion but with an accusation of lying or fakery. Debate has been reduced to playground insults and that has spread into private dscussions as well. Once the general argument is reduced to accusing people of lying rather than simply disagreeing with them, the tone is bound to be lower.

  • This place is free to visit, free to participate, and free to not participate. As we all know, if the buffalo feels something is out of line he will handle it. This is him house. We are visitors. Again this is free. You don't pay for
it and you don't own it. Regardless of
    your post count or
lack there of.  If we don't like it then we are free to look elsewhere or find the exit door. Could it be any more simple than that? Seems it's always the same crybabies crying about the same shït. No one is forcing you to come here. If you enjoy this place great. If you don't then find something that better suits your needs. There is no crying in BBQ. Or was it baseball. Or was it men don't cry over BBQ. I can't remember. I hate this place.

Agree completely. For many Canucks, the last few months has been like hanging over the backyard fence watching a train wreck fight between your neighbours. One minute you can understand the wife's perspective, the next minute you can understand the husband's.
Still, it is hard to take your eye's off of it.

@JohnInCarolina -  Upon review, I think that anus would be best cooked on the BGEtisserie as it is designed with the center cut already there.  May have to tighten up the sphincter to keep it from failing to rotate during the cook.

  • The fluff to BBQ ratio on here has been way out of wack in recent months. It will be good to see things settle down and get back to cooking.
