Giving my final exam in my graduate course (continuum mechanics).  Nothing quite like proctoring a test from 2-5 on a Saturday.  And yes I could ask one of my PhD students to do this, but that's not the way I roll.

The academic equivalent of "when in charge, be in charge."  Clearly the right thing to do...Well-played.

Good request; my BS is in ME, and I don't even know what "continuum mechanics" is!

After a quick calculation, the correct answer is 7. Not C.

    Thanks @JohnInCarolina

I like that. Thanks for playing along. I'm headed to Florida for vacation for a while. I may try to tackle this problem. Also, I might not.  Is this one of the easier problems or one of the more difficult problems on the test? I see it's worth 30 points. Are all of the problems weighted the same?

Are you grading all of these exams? How many students? How long will it take you to grade these exams?

  • You lost me at carbon fiber in concrete, because I always thought that the best fiber to put carbon in was underpants for my sister Beulah. Your problem seems to indicate that there's concrete out there somewhere with worse farts than Beulah has. I'm glad I never went to college, if you all are just problem solving farting concrete there. My father always said .. if it's going to smell bad, just don't let it out. You college folks would do well to tell the new concrete people that I guess.

It’s one of the harder problems, so it’s worth more.  I’ll be grading them all myself, I always do.  There are nine students in the course.  It will take me most of the day today to grade.

Haha I’m actually flying out to Albuquerque.  So I’ll be grading on the plane.  The university rules say we’re not supposed to grade when we’re high but I don’t think this is what they meant…

@JohnInCarolina - I will take an option on that question.  So the students aren't yet in the PhD program and wrestling with this??
What have we come to where you have to be told, by the rules, to not grade when high?? ;)  I mean there is a good chance some of the test takers, paper writers etc were high at the time their knowledge was offered up...

I was thinking that my undergraduate structures class didn't get into this sort of thing. And anisotropic behavior of materials is common enough in aerospace composite structural engineering, but I hadn't thought that civil engineering addressed it. Very interesting -- and far beyond my lowly level of rigor. Thanks!

Dumb question @JohnInCarolina I understand weaves in concrete and rebar in concrete, but your drawing looks like carbon tubes.  That could be interesting because not only could you improve tensile strength, but may even improve compressive and flexural strength.  How do you "firmly" embed tubes like that?
