In the United States, the majority of enslaved people were forced to work on plantations and farms, primarily in the Southern states. They were mainly involved in the cultivation of cash crops such as cotton, tobacco, rice, and sugar. These crops were labor-intensive and required a large workforce, which is why slavery became deeply entrenched in the agricultural economy of the South

Enslaved people were also used in other sectors, including domestic work, skilled trades, and industrial labor. However, the plantation system was the dominant form of slavery in the U.S., shaping the social and economic landscape of the country.

I wonder if they wore overalls.

Something I find interesting is that those who fly the confederate flag are flying a flag in support of democrats.  I wonder if they know that?

    1. Southern Plantation and Slave Owners:

    - In the pre-Civil War era, the Democratic Party was the dominant party in the South and broadly represented the interests of Southern plantation owners, including the defense of slavery. Southern Democrats supported states' rights and resisted federal efforts to abolish or limit slavery.
    - This alignment of Southern Democrats with pro-slavery interests led to the Democratic Party's association with the Confederacy during the Civil War.

    2. Abraham Lincoln:

    - Lincoln was a Republican and was the first U.S. president elected from the newly formed Republican Party in 1860.
    - The Republican Party at its founding in the 1850s was largely anti-slavery and had strong support in the Northern states. Lincoln’s election and the Republican Party's stance against the expansion of slavery into new territories contributed significantly to the Southern states’ decision to secede from the Union.

    So, in summary:

    - Southern plantation and slave owners were mostly Democrats at the time.
    - Abraham Lincoln was a Republican and his election marked a turning point in the conflict over slavery, leading to the Civil War.

Forget Democrats, these men were traitors.

One of the oddest things about America is that we have monuments to actual traitors.   Who else does this?

Um, not quite. The war was planned for years and the leaders of the South used his election as the nominal excuse. If one of the other candidates had gotten elected, the South's goals would have been substantially met or near to it, and the war might not have taken place. But the Secession would have occurred.

    Major barn cleaning....

Now that it is winter I try to fill the dumpsters before every pickup.  In the summer, customers would do that for me.

I still have a bunch of stuff left from the old regime.  (In laws).

Very therapeutic to throw all this crap away.

Probably five tractor bucket loads of stuff that has been inside the barn for decades.

I have a large strap pile started.

When in doubt. Throw it out.

Hopefully more in the days to come.

  • “Barn clean out” can mean many different things @kl8ton, 5 bucket loads will barely get you in the door of a good clean out.

For sure.  If you looked, you wouldn't say that I did anything yet.  The ball is rolling.

I prefer to just kind of leave stuff where I last used it or where it broke.  That way I don’t need a full barn clean out.

Nothing is where I last put it.....

I have five employees/offspring that move, destroy, misplace, and trash things.

Also the barn is used for their hobbies....

    We will get there.

I see I typed strap pile.... It should be scrap pile... As in metal scrap. There is a paying scrap yard 3 miles away.

I hear ya. I want one.... It just doesn't make me anymore money if I get one.

Most of the stuff I'm tossing I would never put back into service. A lot of it is supplies/parts/accessories to amenities/equipment/features we no longer have.

my overflow system for junk is to give it to my brother. that way its still there if i need it, just not taking up space in my yard. it would actually be dangerous for me to have too much space =)

Nice portrait in the cabinet! Salute you for being a patriot flying the Canadian flag, hard to see one in the city even on Canada Day.
Edit: seriously, beautiful kitchen you got there. btw, looks like you have space for a Breville Pizzaiolo.

Thank you thank you, I bought the flag a while ago kinda as a joke during one of my Canada Day bbqs and really like it so ended up mounting it permanently.

I never heard of the breville pizzaiolo before but now that I know what it is i might have to scoop one up.....

Unlikely. Don’t want to make you (more) jealous.

As you well know, we are rocking a 50s kitchen with original cabinetry. Floor probably has four layers of flooring on it. Some of the contents are pretty incredible though.

    Couldn’t be happier.
