So on March 10, Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot went to NY City Hall to share the findings with Mayor Bill de Blasio and urge him to begin taking more drastic action to control the spread of the coronavirus, which has since claimed 450 lives across New York City. De Blasio resisted, believing that closing schools, restaurants and cultural centers would cripple the city’s economy and disproportionately hurt the marginalized residents he aims to prioritize.

2/24/20-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi toured San Francisco's Chinatown Monday to send a message. She said there's no reason tourists or locals should be staying away from the area because of coronavirus concerns.

During a Feb. 29, 2020, interview, Dr. Fauci said that at that time and under the circumstances pertaining to that date, Americans didn't need to change their behavior patterns.

Just the facts Ron, just the facts.

Someone else here quoted that Trump owns this. Really?? Trying to pin the blame on one person or party is ludicrous. Everyone reacts to their own political leanings yet fail to go back a short time and look at comments from Politicians on both sides.

Bill is full of crap, the Spanish flu wasn't even from Spain. It's called the Spanish flu because the free press in Spain was able to publish the facts about what was happening while censorship in Germany, UK, France, and yes, even here in the US suppressed what was actually happening.

Lots of blame to go around, politics aside (I know, I know) how long can the government lock it down before there is a widespread revolt? I suspect there are two non political camps out there. Those who are monetarily unaffected or marginally affected that support a lengthy lockdown to save the most lives and another camp that’s getting financially devastated and need desperately to get back to work. This has been at most an inconvenience to me personally thankfully but a huge portion of people live paycheck to paycheck and a lot of those are gone. There is some real overreaching going on in some areas with what free people can do and can’t. This isn’t going away until a vaccine is widely administered and that’s many months away. How long can people be locked down that cant ride this out?

@Dobie - I think you nailed a very real mindset.  To add to this, just because someone wants to get back to work, doesn’t mean they don’t care about the risks or infecting other people, they are faced with likely a lot of anxiety And hard decisions that a lot of us won’t understand.

My Dad’s tenant (for his only rental house) just got laid off from the oil fields. My sister had to close her fabric store two weeks ago when the governor shut all nonessential businesses. She is still there every day sewing masks though she has had to start charging for them, got to pay store rent. The governor has said that school is closed for the rest of the school year though online classes will still be available. My other sister runs a preschool and it has been ruled an essential business. They live in a town that is the medical center for a 70 mile radius. All the medical personnel had to have someplace to leave their kids. She has obtained masks from my older sister for her workers and needless to say cleaning has been amped up.

Again.....who was/was not calling the shots?

    Is Donald Trump the President?

Do you deny he said that at a GOVERNORS's conference and again on Fox with Trish Regan?

How about Feb 13, when again, interviewed by Geraldo Rivera, when he said it was weaker than the flu and they had it completely under control.

Do you really want me to  keep going?

You: "Meanwhile, there's Uncle Joe Biden who can't even form a complete sentence yet he's the Dem's top choice? WTF?"

And I suppose Trump is the great orator?

Strangely enough liquor stores are still open. One liquor store owner when interviewed, said that she couldn’t restock the shelves fast enough. I must say that I am not surprised.

Can you imagine the health crisis the front line workers would have to deal with if alcohol was suddenly unavailable? Now is not the time to deem beer, liquor and cannibis non-essential.

I think it was Denver, a few days ago, that tried to close down the liquor stores.  It lasted about an hour.

So Our Dear Leader is now insisting that his name appears on the printed checks being sent out to the millions of folks that will be receiving their stimulus money via the mail.
    What a putz!
Saw one comment on Twitter say that now that his name is on the check they'll probably bounce. LOL

The worst part about that decision being that the checks are delayed a couple of days.

"The Obama administration made a decision on testing that turned out to be very detrimental to what we're doing. And we undid that decision a few days ago so that the testing can take place in a much more accurate and rapid fashion," Trump said at a March 4 briefing.

"We have made great progress with the antibody testing, fantastic progress," Trump said at a media briefing April 5.

Five days later, Vice President Mike Pence said at a media briefing that "very soon we will have an antibody test that Americans will be able to take to determine whether they ever had the coronavirus."

Regulatory changes by President Donald Trump's administration have made it easier for companies to flood the US market with "crappy" tests that are supposed to determine whether someone has recovered from coronavirus, according to the CEO of the Association of Public Health Laboratories.

"It's like the wild, wild West out there -- or wild East," said Scott Becker, a reference to the fact that at least half of the companies making these tests are in China.

Now companies that want to sell antibody tests can seek FDA approval if they want to, but they don't have to. Only one company, Cellex, Inc., has received FDA approval for its antibody test.

Many others are taking advantage of the FDA's relaxed rules. So far according to the FDA, at least 54 companies are allowed to sell their tests just by informing the FDA that they intend to sell the test and that it has been validated. The companies do not have to actually supply validation data, which indicates that the test provides accurate results.

Becker says many of these companies are incorrectly claiming that the FDA has reviewed or recommended their test, neither of which is true.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, has called such tests "critical."

"The antibody test says you were infected and if you're feeling well, you've very likely recovered," Fauci said. "As we look forward, as we get to the point of at least considering opening up the country as it were, it's very important to appreciate and to understand how much that virus has penetrated society."

I do not know. Right now, there are many folks, that care more for the country, than political party. Trump is that reason why that has changed. Many moderates crossed the line to elect him last time, I am not so sure that foothold remains as strong as it was in 2016.

Too many unemployed right now, 401K investments evaporated, the debt increasing more under his administration than any other time in our history....property values decreasing, and his Jan to March denial, which cost thousands of lives, will be remembered, as will his impeachment.

When people begin to lose homes and cars and their savings go to zero...those who voted for MAGA might not believe that Trump is the right person for America, to be standing at the precipice of recession and likely depression.

Hillary was as polarizing as it gets to run against. Joe, nowhere near. Remember Hillary had over 2MM more votes. A detested candidate still got more votes than Trump. I chose not to vote for either. That will not happen this election.

We will see. I care for my country and every American too much to consider Trump against anyone, personally. Even if Biden turns out to be the worst candidate facing Trump, he will present a challenge, much greater than Hillary ever hoped to.

Good luck riding the next few months out....stay safe.
Yes I do agree with some of your statement but before the virus hit 401k was in great shape and the economy was booming. Yes if Trump knew about the virus and didn’t do anything about it then he will be exposed and which he should be. I just don’t understand all the hate for him on the virus. It started in China and we know that 100%. As of today we have 125k deaths around the world from this virus and counting. The US accounts for 25k out of the 125k. Who are you blaming for the other 100k deaths? Trump? You said that someone you knew died from the virus in Italy if I recall? That’s terrible but who’s fault is that? The source of the virus is at fault. Im not defending Trump but I am saying quit blaming him for all the faults of the US and world.
A huge reason the dow and parts of the economy were booming was because the GOP congress forgot they opposed deficit spending once a Republican was in the White House.  Despite a booming economy, deficit spending had increased about $400 billion/year between 2016 (deficit of $584.7 billion) and 2019 (deficit of $984.1 billion), and the FY2020 deficit was projected to top $1 trillion BEFORE we had a national emergency that is going to massively increase this year's deficit.

Right.  We should be "making hay while the sun is shining" and not throwing gasoline into an established fire.  Greed is a powerful motivator, and there's not much gasoline left in the tank to deal with this kind of issue.  Oh well.  We reap what we sow.

    </end metaphoric diatribe>

Let’s hear your plan on how to fix this issue?
Happily, I will provide it.  It's the obvious. Not in any particular order.

    1. Create or enable a central organization to coordinate with all state and local governments a commissary system that supplies PPE, Vents, sanitizers, meds and other supplies needed to save lives based on the projected needs from the front lines.

    2. This organization should utilize the 1950 war powers act that was enacted by Trump but not significantly used to meet the projected needs of the front line responders, including police, EMS and the medical community.  Sign contracts with the government to convert factories and our manufacturing industry to ramp up production like we're in WWII and making B17 bombers.

    3. Train people who have immunity on basic respiratory medicine to be used to treat people who are sick as the medical community falls ill and the numbers increase to overwhelm hospitals.

    4. Work with Apple/Google, etc to design an app everyone has that identifies symptoms and tracks social interactions to mitigate community spread.

    5. Ramp up production through the war powers act to get every company capable of manufacturing quick tests for the virus and for the antibody to rapidly make available categorical determinations of who is sick, or immune (to the extent we know) to work the supply chain and keep the manufacturing of critical supplies and the food chain running.

    6. Give whatever support/money necessary that will accelerate an immunization solution, because, until we get 60% herd immunity, which comes with a terrible cost, we will not be able to "open up" society.

    7. Speedtrack visas for foreign workers to harvest crops and keep the food supply chain moving.

    8. Work with other countries because the food supply is a global equation.

    9. Let statisticians and experts do the talking and use our expertise and history, and not a narcissistic d!ck sucking fest presser to give people good information and stop the confusion that just costs us grandma.

    10. Etc.

I think that what we will see is that because we have no ability to perform testing on the scale required (damn you Obama) and the antibody testing is suspect at best and still a ways off, we will loosen things a bit, or a lot in some areas where skeptics and deniers make the choices and we will experience some setbacks, unless, you know, somehow the virus miraculously disappears in April with the heat.

It'd be great if it did disappear for a bit so that we can buy some time to find some medical solutions other than malaria or heartworm/headlice medications, and maybe by August we could have some widespread testing.
