That’s definitely not the outcome my Belgian PhD student wanted.  He’s going to be bummed.

I just had the radio while out looking for the dog. Only goal from a set piece in spite of all that speed up front. Looking forward to tomorrow now.

Belgium just never showed up in the second half.  As ever - being the better team on paper means nothing.
The sub-plot emerging during the game last night was, who is going to replace Ronaldo at RM;  Hazard or Mbappe?

Hazard is not Ronaldo.  Mbappe might prove to be.  They'd probably need both of them to replace his goal generation/output. But buying from billionaire owners will not be an exercise in being thrifty.  They could probably get Mo Salah a lot cheaper because Liverpool's owners (to the chagrin of their fans) pay attention to the money.   Harry Kane would be relatively affordable as well, although I don't think he's in the same class as the others mentioned.

Perhaps shifting Ronaldo will free-up RM to consider more tactics and bring through different players.  They have turned in to Ronaldo and ten others.
Kane won't move this year, because of the new stadium and Champions League.  Certainly would not bet against it next year.

Croatia- with all the extra time, they have played the equivalent of a complete game.  And one day less rest than France.  But I'm sure they are not complaining.

So who do English fans root for now? The team that knocked them out, or their historical enemy?

Nobody, I'm only really bothered if England are playing or if someone is playing against Germany.

Does anyone (team-wise) show up for Saturday's match?

The only benefit for the team is that goals count towards the golden boot, so Kane might win that.

I did not see Croatia beating England, but the English side was clearly outplayed in the second half. Should be a great final.

So many upsets this tourney - Germany not advancing, Portugal and Argentina out early, Brazil losing. It’s been a great tourney.

Trippier looks to be out and I would guess that Alli will not feature.  Its widely suspected that Kane is carrying a knock, too.

Southgate could equally likely field the best available XI or play the bit-parters and get some experience across the squad.   The risk is that the Belgiquies take it very seriously and remorseless set-up Big Rom' to get the golden boot.

Still disappointed that flat-lined - but, the big news is that the squad has not been shredded by the media.   This is a significant U-turn and very welcome.

Euro qualies up next.  Unless Nigel F' has put his fun-sponge misery spell on that too.

It really did seem England was getting pushed around physically.

England are no longer a physically big, intimidating team. They have gone for young players who are fast and skillful. They are also a bit inexperienced and have not been good at turning chances into shots on target from open play. For all Englands 'chances' in the first half, the end result was 1 shot on target. We certainly domjnated the first half and put a lot of pressure on, but only hit the target once.

I'm not sure that's true.  The half time stats I saw showed an edge to Croatia on possession and shots.  My take was that things were about even with the obvious exception of the goal.
