Way out of my league here.
I've hung with guys who did some of this same stuff..had a good time..and came to the same conclusion fairly quickly. With all that has happened in terms of the costs that certain generations are bearing now and soon will be in the near future?..even 'camping' (as a hobby) is getting to be a financial hardship for a growing share of this country who will (sadly) never know a smidgen of what is being discussed here.

Not knocking anything or anybody...just sayin'
im just glad i bought everything in my 20's and 30's, cause in my 50's theres no pocket money anymore. even my 1000 square foot house would be out of my price range the way the market has gone compared to pay. banks were funny back then, my first mortgage was more than 3 paychecks a month =)
    ...at an outrageous percent.
Amen. We were able to not only sock away hobby toys for the rest of our lives but purchase property/homes (most of us) could't afford today.
And now we're telling our kids (what)..to save every penny that they ever get their hands on..forget the hobbies..prepare your families for the worst (expensive in and of itself)..and expect the best (which every single one of us knows is impossible).
We're the most fortunate generation in the history of man yet have no interest whatsoever in there ever being another.
what makes me laugh is when i hear the older generation from the 50's say they had it harder, my dad back then would say his house cost more per month and he had a stay at home wife with 2 kids to support =) those numbers dont add up at all, all the pay went to the mortgage and the wife and kids and two cars were free =)

@tarheelmatt yes, I'll be bringing about 300 to Butt Blast. (200 for @SGH appetizer and one or two each for the rest of us).  Will pull them out of the water on Friday morning and hit the road to BB so anyone there Friday night will get to have some same day they were harvested.

@RRP one of the guys in the photos is a friend of mine and president of a 501c3 called Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Assoc to which I belong.  That's where I took the master oyster gardener program  (modeling after the land-based master gardener program).  I've put in 10,000 every other year which will yield about 6,000.

    Photography...
Yeah. People who aren't into this don't understand how digital has screwed it all up. There was a time that your body and lenses were immortal, and all the money went into film and developing. Now there is no film, and you can do all your editing on the computer. But every two years your camera itself becomes obsolete, and you have to fight the urge to drop another $2000-$6000 (depending on your tolerance for such a thing) for a new body. Or a new format comes out, like m4/3, and you have to decide if you want to go a completely different direction. And then your manufacturer comes out with a lens that is the exact same length as the one you use that you like best, but yours goes to f/2 and this one goes to f/1.8...

It's never that you need a new camera, or new lenses, just like you don't need a BGE. But you get caught up in the camera porn, and you like new gadgets, and you start figuring out how to budget for it.
I've always wished that Nikon would release a camera just like my old, beloved FM-2, all manual controls, except with a digital back/no film (a spot meter too, please).  Damned if they didn't do almost that with the Df:

There's still too much "tech" on it, but I have it set to Manual mode, and the last couple lenses I've purchased are used, old enough to still have the aperture ring on the lens.  That it had the sensor from Nikon's (former) flagship D4 in it was icing on the cake, and I sprang for it last summer.  I don't see myself upgrading again in this lifetime; sensor resolution and low-light performance will continue to improve but this camera takes pics that, on my 28" Retina screen iMac, have detail that my old eyes can't even see.  I'm happy.

Wow, @Rob02639.  Great guitars.  My son who is studying guitar performance and sound engineering at the Peabody Conservatory would be jealous.  My mother-in-law lives about 30 minutes from you in Eastham.  We go there every summer.  We've also got friends in Dennis Port and have been to the West Dennis Yacht Club for a party.  That's a great area.  I can see why you are loving the cottage life.

Well @Foghorn you should swing by Heritage Sands the next time you visit Cape Cod! (I'm not just a "member," I'm also the developer). For the Dennis fireworks this year we are bringing back an amazing singer-songwriter Ryan Fitzsimmons! Ryan also is in charge of marketing for Bourgeois Guitars out of Maine.  He is definitely someone I think your son would enjoy meeting!!

@Rob02639, I will definitely keep that in mind.  We have been there for the past 18 years for 4th of July, but we may not make it this year.  Too many moving parts.  Daughter going to a summer semester in Barcelona.  Son got a summer job at a new BBQ restaurant.  I've got some work obligations that I've never had before...  My wife and I sat down last night and tried to make some tentative plans and basically came up with nothing concrete.

We usually watch the Eastham fireworks from First Encounter Beach, but Dennis sounds better.

@Focker I cannot recommend a fat bike enough!  I'm in Minnesota and picked one up in the fall.  I felt like an 8 year old again this winter. I have been riding groomed mtn bike trails and gravel roads when there is less snow. The thing is a blast to ride and keeps me off of the dreaded trainer.
Thanks for the input.  Rode with a group on RAGBRAI with 'em.  Was cool chatting with them on the road.  One will be added to the stable soon.  Been looking at MTB bow mounts.  Should be interesting riding at 300lbs, with 60lbs of gear on my back.  The trails at my hunting spot are nice and wide.  Saw a cool setup out there, someone used some BMX wheels and a metal medic spinal board, modded a sweet pull behind gear/deer hauler.  I will figure something out.  I'm with ya, the stationary is brutal.

Wait until the BILL comes due for the 20 TRILLION $ national debt.  Somebody who OWNS their home and has few expectations of BIG purchases will be on a dog food diet with the 2000$ per month SocialSecurity payout.  And a Reverse Mortage will just end up transferring Title to some greedhead.

Hubby: Books, he doesn't collect per say but as a College Professor he uses them in his work, plus he just loves books. We have about 3,000 titles. Yes that is right. We have a smaller house so needless to say there are storage issues.

Me: traveling-have been to Europe/Great Britain numerous times, going to Denmark and Germany in May. Plus the off year domestic trips.

On top of all that we are wine and craft beer aficionados so there goes a bit of money. I must have about 50 bottles of wine in our house, plus a vino temp to store them. But we worked hard all our life, think we deserve a few luxuries.

I was just saying the other day that I sure can pick expensive hobbies to enjoy. I do a few triathlons every year.  Not Ironman tris but some smaller events.  I have really cut back on the spending there but there always seems to be a new bike toy or some new tri suit I "gotta have."  Then there's the traveling with the girls to go to the races.  We just love going to beach to compete.  Yeah, that's what we do there.   B)
There's also the shooting.  Just bought myself a new 9mm today in fact.  I'm probably going to post a pic of that later on.  I tried really hard not to buy it but I just HAD to.  I couldn't help it!

I've got a few pics  lol

    Seiko Stargate

    PAM088

My dad's old Seiko diver. I'm estimating it to be from around 1968-70 or so. Long story short, my dad passed away when I was 11. This Seiko was one he had been eyeing at the store on base while he was in basic training. They only had 1 and he had to sneak off post to go and buy it. It's one of the watches that got passed onto me when he died.

My dad's Sub. The other watch that I was lucky enough to have passed on. It was a gift to my dad from my mom for his first Father's Day after I was born.

    Luminox Colormark 3051

Im debating whether or not to pick up either a Longines Legend Diver or Breitling Superocean Heritage sometime in the next little bit. Or a Scar 17 lol
