"Former President Trump faces more than 30 counts related to business fraud in an indictment from a Manhattan grand jury, according to two sources familiar with the case. Former President Trump is expected to voluntarily surrender on Tuesday, according to one of his lawyers, Susan R. Necheles. Trump’s lawyer Joe Tacopina said that the Secret Service, which provides security detail for the former president, needed more time to prepare. Erica Orden reports for POLITICO.

The indictment of former President Trump is unlikely to have any legal bearing on Trump’s 2024 presidential candidacy, even if he is ultimately convicted. The U.S. Constitution does not require candidates for the highest office to have a clean record. The indictment marks the first time a former president has faced criminal charges. Last night after my usual evening news (CBS/PBS) I decided to watch Faux News for a couple hours. I thought tucker was their "star" propagandist and would be on last, but his show was just finishing. I then watched Hannity, a show I haven't seen before. A large number of guests, I don't know if they're normally that shrill or it was just a stunning day for them; live audience that H and guests were trying to whip into a frenzy, and at one point there was some kind of a protester interrupting (couldn't tell if it was in hannity's studio or lindsey graham's) but there was a fight going on, somewhere.
Then watched Ingraham, had to turn it off after about 8 minutes.

Honestly, if faux is the only "news" source watched by half this country, its no wonder we're so divided. I do know that base commanders in both the AF and the Navy are starting to forbid faux on the TVs in the base cafeterias (haven't heard of any Army units doing that yet), explains why too many of my old Air Force teammates still support cheeto.

Once again, the only way any of us can tell if our news source(s) are accurate, is to witness an event with your own eyes. I did this during the Mueller testimony, watched the first hour of news commentary directly after the testimony on four different news channels; it confirmed what I thought about Faux, about PBS, and was enough for me to switch from CNN to CBS. Both PBS and CBS reported pretty much what I heard. We all have another chance to do this Tuesday next week, a useful and sometimes eye-opening exercise.

Fox is "entertainment" when the opinion stuff is on, although much of the remainder of "news" programming is actually thinly veiled opinion/editorial or highly biased. Seems like almost everyone who left the cheeto white house or Fox news has shocking contemporaneous stories to tell.

The GOP and Fox News coordinated messaging with daily memos from Rupert and the gang. They stay on message, even though that message is pretty much mostly fear mongering and riling up the base, and planting all kinds of false information in the brains of the viewers.

That's why wildman and littleracist recite the same sound bytes and have a twisted world view that's as predictable as the sun rising.

Sadly, so too has cracked the much more porous layer that partially sealed our consciousness from the bombardment of ubiquitous Trump news. American society should have been sentenced to time served. Instead, the story we couldn't shake for four years is back and bigger than ever, and the attention economy will once again be dominated by the orange one, as Americans prepare for a endless White Ford Bronco chase that will take viewers from Mar-a-Lago, to downtown NYC, and very likely to Georgia and DC, where Trump faces far more serious charges. Is the first indictment of a former president a happy occasion? It's as sad as it is anything else as we come to terms with how much damage this presidency did, and continues to do, to the fabric of our nation. Here are a few quick thoughts on the first, but unlikely the last, indictment of a former president. In certain quarters, the indictment was met with outrage, calls for protests, and attacks on NY DA Alvin Bragg. Forget the fact that these attacks are largely made either out of fear of Trump or a quest for ratings or fundraising dollars. Forget also that these urgent defenses are being made on behalf of twice-impeached guy who refused to accept an election and stirred an insurrection. Instead, consider this: None of the people yelling about the injustice of this case even know what the case is. None of us do. Not even Trump's lawyers have seen the indictment yet. You'll be hearing a lot of Trump's reactions to the indictment. Pay more attention to reaction come from others, like Ron DeSantis, who said he wouldn't aid in the extradition of Trump from Florida and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy who proclaimed that he will hold Alvin Bragg "and his unprecedented abuse of power to account." Take note: the Trump virus has spread and mutated. The festering, gaping wound that ruptured the body politic is not healed; it's worsening as these enablers add insult to injury. On what used to be the fringes, the words Soros is code for Jews. Today, the fringes are mainstream as many on the right, including the top two GOP presidential candidates, invoked his name in response to the indictment. Don't ignore what's in front of your face. I hope we don't see violence as a response to this indictment. But if we do, it will because a former president of the United States is inciting it, just as he incited the violence on Jan 6. And still, one political party is determined to protect him any cost. The big story here, as it was for the four disastrous years of the Trump presidency, is just how broken America is. Tom Nichols in The Atlantic: "Tomorrow, all NYPD officers have reportedly been ordered to be in full uniform and ready to deploy. And again, somehow, we've just accepted this as the new normal. We no longer even blink when New York, a city scarred by multiple terror attacks against its innocent citizens, has to go on alert just to charge Trump with a crime. That one fact, more than any other, tells you how far down the long slide into vice and venality—and violence—Trump has dragged this country." David Remnick in The New Yorker: "With this indictment, we have entered a new act in the saga, one in which Trump contemplates turning a potential perp walk into a campaign opportunity. Who else could envision fingerprints, a mugshot, and cuffs as tools in an effort to 'consolidate the base'?"

But bear in mind that Michael Cohen was prosecuted for the Stormy Daniels cover up by the DOJ when Trump was in the White House, and he was sentenced to three years in prison.

Regardless, Trump is innocent until proven guilty. He’ll have his day in court, on these matters and perhaps others. I don’t see a problem letting that play out. We’re better off as a country when nobody is above the law.

I read this and hear this a lot from the Fox / Bongino crowd. I've never seen anything credible to back it up other than some verbal gaffes and stuttering remnants. Is there some credible data on this?

My dad died three years ago at 89 with a pretty good case of dementia - unclear if Alz or some kind of age related dementia, but we watched it progress for years. He was in memory care for his last year when my mom couldn't take care of him any longer. He was still lucid at least 50% of the time and could fool most people during that time. And still it's night and day the difference between him and Biden. I really wonder if people
make these claims from place of knowledge or if it's just the easy thing to say.

I hate that we may have Biden as our best choice for the next president, but here we are, I've yet to see any better suggestions, declared or not, either party.

I’ve only read what’s been said. He did make a poor comment about getting ice cream the day of the shooting last week when doing his presser. Maybe just poor timing, maybe not.

Many times there’s a context behind something like that which is missing. I saw the clip and the tell for me is that the audience burst out laughing at his remarks.

In any case, I’m not sure I’d hold it up as evidence that he isn’t coherent half the time he speaks. At best it maybe looks like poor judgment or something.
