Great point. Let's make some comparisons that take into account population.

State of New York: population, 20 million, 138k positive cases
Country of Italy: population, 60 million, 135k positive cases

Hmmm.

Doesn’t that say more about the state of New York than the United States? Want to compare the other 49 or compare them one by one to Northern Italy?

yes, you bring up an extremely good point.

When POTUS mentioned approximately a week or so ago that the US had tested more people than S. Korea... US population= 330ish million. SK population= 50ish million i.e. they had already tested 1 in 150 of their citizens as of ~2 weeks ago... 10K citizens daily. We're not even close, and won't be, the way things are going.

Re: India and its 1+ bn people... even they are doing a better job about contact tracing than we seem to be. Largest railway system in them in the world converted 6K+ berths in railway cars to accommodate patients (almost overnight) to try and depressurize the medical system. That was also about a week ago. A country with a fraction of the $$$ spent on healthcare (and defense/intelligence) vs. the US.

Don't forget China's sizeable population. Not saying that they are being transparent about their numbers, but believe that if they really wanted to fudge the numbers, they are well capable of doing that.

Actually my statement was favorable to to India which is why I specifically mentioned them.

I think it mostly demonstrates that the per capita numbers are only useful up to a point.

The rate of growth has always been my main concern. It should be yours too.

it's anybody's guess as to how true the numbers from India are, in terms of COVID positive patients and community spread . The whole country is locked down right now, in a desperate attempt to slow this down.

That would be a good exercise... 3 or 4 weeks from now. NYC is a travel/business hub, with extremely high population density and mass public transit, so it obviously got hit early on. LA might've been in a similar situation, except:
a. everyone there commutes in individual automobiles, and
b. Guv'nor Newson clamped down quicker than Guv'nor Cuomo.

FL is getting hit now because they didn't regulate Spring Break (and a huge elderly pop), and Nawlins for the same reason (Mardi Gras/St Paddie's). Michigan/Detroit are also a hot spot now, I don't know why.

Give it three/four weeks. The hot spots will switch to the defiant "let's go to church!" evangelical areas, the less populated central states, the states where the Guv'nors didn't impose a shutdown (including my own). Sadly, the med facilities in these places are much weaker.

I'm afraid the peaks will come much quicker in those places...

Actually my parents Southern Baptist church has been streaming services only for 5 weeks now. It actually amazed me. My parents have been holed up on their property for about the same time. They were saved from boredom though. The IRS decided to audit them and 2 of their 5 grand children will be filing for divorce.

Apparently because "stay at home" measures have been more successful than previously estimated. Previous estimates were made assuming 50% of people were staying put, but its been higher than that.

I only hope the fatalities projections continue to fall.

Well and then there is the issue that these are assuming that social distancing continues for quite a long period of time. For me one of the main concerns is people and municipalities relaxing these measures too quickly.

Considering that I see “Bath Fitter”commercials that tout their essential status, I would agree that anything food related would surely be deemed essential.

Most farmers are in their 50’s . They also don’t function independently. They have to buy fertilizer, fuel, seed, equipment parts etc and have it delivered. They hire temporary labor for planting some crops and fire harvesting more. If their crops get harvested then they need to be processed, packaged, distributed, and sold. Milk is already being dumped. I know blueberry and produce farms that operate on the “you pick it” model. Will their customers show up and will they have the money to do so?

Neighbor is going to the blueberry farm in Mims on tomorrow, masked and gloved. Not sure how he will clean the berries when he gets them home if they have been touched my someone asymptomatic not gloved.

You put the berries in a colander/strainer and run tap water through them. If the berries are cooked for jams, pies , etc it should kill the virus.

I would soak them in solution of vinegar and pickling salt, then rinse with fresh water. Then wait a week before eating?

Think of the excitement! Some violators will dash by without harm, while others will writhe in electronic agony. If they enjoy risk so much, this ought to be right up their alley.

Meantime, those who obey the order — fill the stands with them! — can enjoy a vicarious thrill of punishment. Win-win, I say.

What's that? You say this idea is outrageous and unethical? No more so than that of self-indulgent jerks who flit about willy-nilly and don't care about spreading disease during a global pandemic.
