I believe for the most part it hasn't infected children. What I did hear is that the few children that did catch it has been very minor diagnosis. Hopefully it stays like this...
You're missing the danger, here.  Yes, it doesn't seem to harm young'uns to a large extent (good thing!), but they still carry the virus! They run home, and love to give Grandma and Grandpa hugs, who are a lot more vulnerable.

From what I have been following yes the morbidity of this disease is high (symptoms and those affected)....however compared to other pathogens I.e. the flu, malaria, eastern encephalitis . Mortality is certainly low in relative terms.

I get it's new and scary but I'm sorry I don't get the whole OMG panic especially with fire crews refusing to run
.. if this disease had a high mortality yes but the numbers aren't adding up...unless there's something we aren't being told about this I think it's being way blown out of the water.

Do I think this is political no....
The tinfoil hat wearer in me does think this started out as a biological agent in a research lab in China that got released either intentionally or unintentionally

I do find humor in the irony of there has been a massive change of opinion from open boarders, let's let everyone in.....to now shut down these boarders quarantine everyone.....
It amazes me how everyone hops from country to country willy nilly, yet we have to have health certificates that are good for 30 days at best to move dogs and cats across state lines, especially across countries

And with all that said I'm not wishing illness on anyone

Dude I'm sincerely sorry your kid is having to experience this , and I hope they or you don't become sick from it. Are they looking at this as an extended spring break /vacation?

Probably bears emphasis that many folks here have close relatives who are HCWs.  That tends to focus the mind.

Is the mortality rate high because only people with a sever reaction are getting tested? While young, and middle aged people are having very mild symptoms, treating it like the flu, and moving on with their life. They are not getting tested, thus not providing accurate sample information.

Obviously this is true here as we have not tested very many people.  But S. Korea does testing en masse. Every country is different. There are graphs of age vs mortality that are ranges that are based on the best data obtained so far.  This is a moving target and viruses mutate.  Also there are demographical risk factors.  Take this information for what its worth.

Rollout of testing in US has been very slow compared to many countries.  You can’t count what you can’t test and confirm.  I don’t think we have any real idea of what the number of cases in US is at this point.  Country to country comparisons don’t really matter.
My point in showing this comparison is because we are basically on the same trajectory as Italy yet many still discount the severity of the situation.

We had plans to head to Disney World today, but decided it’d be best to postpone. All I want is to drink around the world at Epcot (maybe skip China and Italy), I’ll give it a month and see how this shakes out.

Important no doubt, but the real issue isn’t the mortality rate.  It’s what percentage of infected people need to be hospitalized.  That’s the actual danger to our healthcare system right now.

Article I saw this morning states that Italy doesn’t have enough medical equipment or personnel to properly treat the amount of patients it has. They’re basically now transformed into a war zone triage. Patients are ranked and having to be treated accordingly, or not at all.

^^^This.  Most hospitals barely have enough staff and equipment to run "as normal" and when you add this on top...

Yes I commented to this effect upstream in response to the notion that this was being over-hyped by the media and making matters worse by stoking fear.

one fact I have not come across yet, maybe because I haven't looked hard enough.  Is in the people who have died from this, what percentage of them have a co-morbid ailment or condition that has already weakened their immune system?  Those who are healthy seem to be surviving just like the flu virus.  Just looking for the facts.

Panic is spreading because infection is spreading. From data available this far, the elderly have higher mortality than other age groups. Which stokes the fear fire.

The mortality rate is likely much lower than what has been reported, because we don’t know how many are infected. So we know the numerator, but the denominator is likely much higher than what we know. Many folks are likely infected, with mild symptoms or have recovered.

To me this translates as be as careful as you want to be, but the elderly should be especially cautious. Hand washing, limited contact with others, etc.

But all the hoarded hand sanitizer, wipes, and TP won’t likely matter. Especially the surgical masks, which are just silly. I saw a lady on a flight last week, wearing 2, which she constantly adjusted throughout the flight.

40% (132 million) of Americans are obese, 14% (38 million) smoke and close to 10% are diabetic (34.2 million).  This doesn't include the 15% (50 million) that are elderly. I would say those are significant co-morbid ailments and conditions.

I don't know who disagreed with that statement, but the statistics are what they are. I would highly recommend giving the Rogan podcast linked above a listen. Since rally great info in it.

"Its the flu. 58,000 people die of the flu and pneumonia each year in the US. This is being hyped by the dems to make Trump look bad before the election. If Biden or Bernnie get in how fast will all this go away?"

    Winning comment. Totally.

    Here is the Answer:
Much faster than Trump could ever do it.

The Democrats have no need to to make Trump seem like an imbecile, he is doing a masterful job of this on his own. this may be the final straw for many.

We have known this virus was NOT contained in China since the first week of the New Year. Yet the president chose to do nothing.

    To
categorize this pandemic as the typical type influenza that evolves every "cold and flu season" which an appreciable portion of the population is inoculated against, with a .1% mortality rate...... is, at best, a very uninformed statement.

So far, based on the numbers from The WHO, the corona virus has a mortality rate that may go higher than its current .36% (Most are saying globally as high as 4.0%). It is likely to do so, since there is no vaccine available and the virus can mutate as it spreads to other highly populated areas with limited resources for medical care.

Since the global notification back in January, and the President doing nothing, the stock market has crashed, we are heading into a recession, the virus continues to spread exponentially across America every single day, and Americans are dying because of it.

Democratic hype of grave danger? If it is, and it shames the president to do something other than, of course, blame the democrats, we all should be thankful.

Wash your hands, do not touch your face, and stay away from people. That is all we have. The travel ban is only about 2 and a half months too late.
