I hate my fridge

currently have a Kenmore bottom freezer in stainless. I hate it. The light switch crapped out early on, the freezer has a problem with either an air leak or defrost timer and is constantly frosting and icing which then leaks onto my floor, a shelf recently broke and the ice maker has a mind of its own.

Looking for for recs for a mid range fridge. Not looking for a 10k subzero built in. Go...

Ice maker problem is what caused the fire in my GE on the freezer side!

GE fiddle farted sending a repairman out here 4 times before giving up and replaced the whole refrigerator! I was glad I was still up before heading to bed or maybe we would have lost our home!

  • Do not buy a Samsung. I bought a $3300 Samsung 18 months ago and I'm $800 in repairs outside of warranty and it's still not right. I called and asked them to help and the basically told me to pound sand. And it's not just one thing. Something different has broken every few months. Like all the shelves in the doors (like the ones that hold your milk and condiments) all fell apart. $50 each x4. One of the new ones is already cracked and it's a few weeks old. The ice maker broke and the new one sucks. $365 and it still barely works. Makes enough ice for a single person and I had to buy a steamer to defrost it every single week. It locks up and stops making ice altogether if you don't. The thermostat switch for the flex drawer went bad. Guy repaired it then the whole wiring harness went bad...That means a whole new drawer (another $300). I just decided this week to screw it- I'm cutting my losses and getting something else. Let me know if you find one you like.

BTW mine was out of warranty! But a fire in a freezer didn't set well with their PR dept any better than it did with me!

I will not buy another GE product.  Have had issues with 3 different fredges over a 15 year period.  Also our current GE dishwasher has never done a great job since bought our house new almost 10 years.  Our Westinghouse fridge has done well so far.

@bgebrent not a side by side. Other than that I'm open. Not a huge fan of the French doors, but not a deal killer. Thinking I'll go ice thru the door this time.

I've got the same Maytag that is on the older episodes of Two and a Half Men. Worked flawlessly for 12 years.

This could easily turn into a hate thread! I know several people who swear they will never have another Whirlpool product in their house, but guess what?Whirlpool now owns many popular BIG name brands, so pick your poison!

Same here, but 10 years in for me.

My Samsung leaks water around the edges of the ice/water dispenser. Replaced and started again shortly thereafter.

This right here is why I HIGHLY recommend getting the service plan for tech-y appliances. My parents also bought what sounds like a similar Samsung and finally got it "lemon lawed" after having the same part fixed under the plan 3 times. One service call paid for the plan.

I think that ice makers are the least reliable part of any frig. Through the door ice is the least reliable variation of the least reliable component. Think many times before going that route.

If you Kenmore is made by Whirlpool, which a lot of them are, there was a factory recall on the drain line/trap.
If you call the support line they will send you a new drain line trap.
This will solve the water on the floor issue.
I know this because I have the Whirlpool bottom freezer model and It started leaking water on the floor. You can clean the drain, but it really won't help. It is a very small weep type hole that is very easy to restrict.

If you need more info, I can see if I can find the part # for you.

Not sure if you have a Fisher&Paykel dealer close by, but their counter depth french door, bottom freezer units are excellent. No idea if they are differnt here in Canuckistan than in the Land of the Free, but may be worth a look.

We have a counter depth Kitchen Aid Superba SxS that's been solid for 15 years except for needing to jam a hair dryer in the icemaker maybe twice a year to unfreeze it.

I bought an LG dishwasher about three years ago.  After 18 months it was as noisy as a truck.  I danced around with the store for a while and ended up paying a repairman out of pocket just to be told they all fail like that and need a new motor...which will fail too.  So I went to another store and bought a Bosch and got rid of the LG.  I know it's a diffferent animal than their refrigerators, but I had a bad experience and the repairman said it was a commmon experience.

I'm actually starting to look for a good second fridge for dry-aging beef.  These look pretty good:

I have a Frigidaire Proffesional 18.5cf freezerless refrigerator next to the matching freezer. Tons of storage. The downside is the amount of room they take up.

It seems like it takes up half my kitchen. Wouldn't have been my first choice but it came with the house and has been running strong for 8 years.
