We've had this one for almost 2 years and haven't had any problems.  http://products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-specs/GYE22KSHSS

The biggest thing I would suggest is buying it from a "local" place and not a big box store.  The place we bought ours from does all of their own service and warranty claims.  Side by side it was more expensive than the BBS until you started adding warranties and "extra" charges the BBS charge.

    Does Bosch make a fridge?
We have a Bosch fridge (and dishwasher and wall oven).  Going on 2 years and the only problems have been cosmetic (had to get the freezer handle replaced and the stainless skin seems to be sensitive to dents).  Overall, very happy with all the Bosch stuff.

Have an LG stainless bottom freezer that is approaching 3 years old. No problems. Ice maker still works fine. If/when it dies I'll just use ice trays like I did for the past 20+ years after the ice maker in the previous fridge died.

Didn't care about icemaker and cold water tap in a fridge anyway.
    ....
I went the ice tray route last time my frig's icemaker broke.  It was a pain trying to keep them filled ahead of the family's use.  Lasted about 6 weeks before calling my repair guy to come fix the icemaker (which in my fridge the water valve is the issue as often as the icemaker itself).  Having not had it for awhile I now appreciate the convenience they provide.

All these horrible refrigerators. Geez good thing we have cookers that never have problems like cracked ceramics, subpar gaskets, moisture infiltration through crazing, alignment issues anytime it gets above 500F-700F.....Hey! Maybe these horribly manufactured refrigerators have aftermarket products available that make them better than OE as I hear that some cookers benefit by aftermarket products :fearful:

I'll be honest.  I didn't read through 3 pages of Fridge-Talk.   But I've typically had good luck with CNET reviews.  Hope this helps.

Here's the first thing I see when I open the door of the GE replacement of our burnt one. Shows real sloppy workmanship which makes me wonder about the non-visible parts! Of course that's one of those stickers that can't be removed and placed better.

Agree about the ice maker being the weakest link, swmbo insisted that we disconnect the in-freezer ice maker when we put in a new bottom-freezer counter-depth Kenmore Elite about 4 years ago. Not sure if it was a good idea to buy the 5-yr maintenance agreement since the company may not be around before it expires.

Only incident was a frost up in year 1 ... the incompetent tech wanted to change the condenser fan but didn't have it on hand, while waiting for part I diagnosed it myself and fixed it - all it needed was an overnight shut down and defrost. Strategically I didn't cancel his second visit, when he came back a week later with the fan I proposed that I keep the new fan in case it 'acts up' again, haha. He was more than happy to oblige because he got paid for the 'labour' and didn't want to look stupid for the misdiagnosis that inconvenienced us. Win-win.

Our first harvest gold Kenmore fridge was still going strong after almost 30 years when we got rid of it.

A little fun fact... anyone remember GoldStar?  Apparently it reinvented itself as LG (Lucky GoldStar)!

@legume It's not personal. Just find humorous that folks will spend hundreds on proteins and then **** and moan about spending money for a quality refrigerator. Pretty doesn't equal quality.

@saluki2007 Strictly commercial and industrial. Residential units are nonetheless based on the same concept. But, made for that difficult decision of green, mustard, black or stainless. Oh and c.i. Not to many ask what kind of compressor etc.
And to be fair I have seen commercial units **** the bed at a year as well. But commercial units are rode hard and put away wet on a daily basis. Old Refrigeration may not be efficient but they are built like a brick shithouse.

I moved here 22 years ago, and bought a new frig, washer and dryer, all branded (and I assume, built by) Whirlpool.
All three are still running fine.  I did have a serviceman come out for my washer some years back, and he showed me some things about dry detergent (it doesn't completely dissolve, and had clogged something up), no fault of the washer.  I've used liquid detergents ever since.
He also told me something that stuck, he said "Make sure to repair these things as long as possible, they'll last longer than anything you can buy new, now".  As someone mentioned above, reliability isn't the big selling point, and corporate boards are always pushing for the max quarterly bottom line, rather than long-term satisfaction/reliability.  I gladly pay for higher reliability, but its rare these days.  :(

^^^ Oh yeah, I bought the frig without an icemaker, and fill two ice cube trays with water twice a week.
(I also wash dishes by hand.  Neither has ever failed)

  • All modern GE is crap.  We had a GE washer, dishwasher and fridge we bought new when we moved here 16 years ago.  They all crapped out at about five years old and all within six months of each other.  No more of that.  I have a LG french door fridge that's about four years old and is no trouble.  Our LG dishwasher is older and it's better than washing by hand.

Bought a house in 2001 that had sub zero side by side.   Spent 800 on each for new compressors, have to get the door cams rebuilt every couple of years but service tech says that as long as we keep coils clean and inner linings dont rust our or break, these are pretty much bulletproof.

They have served us well and hopefully keep on keepin' on!

We've had the older model of this fridge since December 2014 and have had zero problems.

The kids love the snack drawer and it works great for parties:

The wife and I love the quick access door!!

As @Eggcelsior suggested in the washer/dryer thread, I highly recommend the extended warranty on all your appliance tech.  We have 2.5 years left, so it's good peace of mind for a minimal price.

I think Yeti should make refrigerators.  They would be like ten grand, and folks would say silly things like.. "Dude it keeps things cold for years!". He he.

Seriously though, I bet there is a market there for them.
