@henapple-I have always appreciated those BGE brethren from the GWN as I spent my youth about 5 KM's south of the border in the very upper state of NY.  As we used to say "cold enough to freeze the nuts off a steel bridge".  And so it continues today, well maybe Monday :)>-

I spent 4 years in Fairbanks, AK. It takes sturdy stock to live that far north. Tip of the hat to you folks.
Be careful, man! I've got a beverage here.
  • My father was in Minneapolis a few weeks ago for Christmas, caught a Timberwolves game with my brother. At the end of the game outside they saw some guys riding bikes outside with shorts on, when it was 10 degrees. I think my father is still in shock over the whole thing.

  • So if I visited my brother in Minneapolis over Christmas(I live outside of Atlanta GA) and it was -13F one morning and I decided I wanted to try using a snow blower for the first time in my life in my shorts, would you understand why my member name DoofusOfTheDay makes perfect sense?

you guys down south, you do know to turn the water on slightly in sinks that sit on an outside wall and to open the cabinets to avoid broken pipes right? especially on the wall that faces the wind

0 degree wind hitting a pipe with standing water will freeze it quickly, especially since houses down south are not insulated like up north. water freezes, copper pipes split. thawed out a pipe at camp last weekend, and a buddies outside well froze up as well, the water needs to be moving slightly. i actually found frost in the bathtub this weekend :D

Just watching CNN and it is colder in Atlanta than it is in Anchorage, go figure.

@Little_Steven it is going to be cold your way tonight, best make a Liquor Store run, for medicinal purposes only of course.

you never know though, my house is 3 inch thick half logs, 6 inches insulation, then plastic sheathing to stop the wind and moisture, then the whole inside is 1/4 inch plywood taped at the seams with 1/2 inch sheetrock covering it, and i still freeze pipes with the house at a toasty 85 inside....arggggh :)) my house faces the wind so hard i can say its 85 with a minus 15degree wind chill inside, feels like 70 :))

Yeah we have a federal squall warning and wind chill. We got 30+cm of fresh powder last night so it's going to be a treat driving home. We are on the north side of the escarpment and so many people can't make it up the hills. It's time they mandated snow tires like Québec did. Have you dipped below zero yet?

That's a good idea @fishlessman.  Another tip that most of us should know is to turn off the shut off valve to outside faucet then open the faucet(this drains the water between the shut off valve and the faucet).  I think you can also simply leave the outside faucet dripping.

Schools were closed in most parts of GA today simply because there was precipitation in the forecast.  In my area, I didn't see any precipitation to speak of.  This is fairly common these days.

However, this is a first, they already closed school tomorrow in my county and there is no chance of precipitation.  They simply closed school because it is too darn cold for us southern folk.

It's not bad driving in it if you have grown up with it. Ice is a pain but snow is kind of fun. Up where I live anyway. Wouldn't want to be in the Toronto rush hours tonight for sure.
