The news this morning said it was incredibly windy. Maybe that had something to do with it.

My read on what happened is that there was a gust that pushed the plane downward onto the runway, causing a much harder landing than the aircraft is rated for. This either caused a failure in the landing gear or enough motion in the wings that the right one came into contact with the tarmac. After that it was all she wrote.

It’s an absolute miracle nobody was killed.

That doesn’t really explain what caused the accident, obviously when you slam 25 tons on the deck something is going to give. Planes land in wind all the time including the flight before it that day. Pilot error or a gust/gear failure like you said? I think we will find out soon. We smacked pretty hard coming into Columbus one night and the copilot was outside with a flash light checking everything out, was that the extent of the inspection?

I didn't suggest it was a full explanation for what happened. I simply hadn't seen any reporting about the landing gear prior to my post, above.

As to why it hit the deck harder than the plane is designed to take, we probably will find out. My prediction is a wind gust. We'll see if that bears out or not.

There’s a component in the cockpit that tells us if they hit too hard aside from the black box. We hit so hard landing in Nashville the overhead bins all opened up lol.

Read a headline today saying that fuel was leaking down into the cabin as the passengers were trying to exit. I’m sure many believed their lives were over. Wonder how many of them will fly again.

Ours wasn’t that bad! When we deboarded I told the pilot jokingly “man you really stuck the landing” swmbo was not impressed, the flight attendant was like “awww it wasn’t that bad”.

It is strange how they never flared, just straight down like an escalator.

Seems premature to take an offer not knowing the cause of the accident. Beside that is 30k enough to cover gas and hotels for the rest of your life? I am sure some of those folks will never fly again.

One of the listeners of a local radio morning show was a passenger on the flight. One of his comments on the radio show was something like, "I'm way too pretty to die." Hahaha. I'm glad he's able to joke around and have a sense of humor about it. Scary stuff.
