    1) You're not wrong. At my chain haircut place the minimum tip that isn't a "custom" tip where you have to enter the actual amount is 25%.  I take the time to enter a custom tip in the 15-20% range.  I'm not cheap and I'm appreciative of the service but I don't like being pressured to tip.
My barber does the same, and I customize to 20%; won't be tipping $5 for a military buzzcut that took them all of 7 minutes to do.
$5 is less than 20% here. I'm in the wrong business. $32.00 for a male cut and they don't even use scissors

Tipping is out of hand. I stopped by a Poke place to get my wife some takeout for lunch. You have to order via a stupid electronic kiosk. I fumbled through entering all of the info and finally got to the checkout screen. It asks for a tip which I declined. I generally tip at fast casual places but won’t do it if a kiosk is involved. That’s my line in the sand.  I tapped no tip and the kiosk refused to proceed with the order. I mentioned something to the staff and was told a tip was required for them to make my food.

I said something along the lines of having coitus by yourself and walked out.

i wont order at a kiosk with my allergy and im stubborn enough that they will take my order.  they still try to kill me,  i send stuff back because of it about half the time

I tip my barber well. He's been cutting my hair for 23 years. He was a new hire, the kid,at the shop then.

    2) I'd love to have a transcript of the "Honey, I didn't get you any Poke because I decided that tipping for ordering my own fast food was a hill I wanted to die on" conversation.  (My point being that I'd be much more likely to take a stance when I'm getting food for myself - especially as opposed to getting food for SWMBO)
She totally understood and agreed. She doesn’t frequent the place very much because they changed ownership, installed the kiosk and raised the price by $5 a bowl. It’s over $20 now. She told me the tip thing must have been new because she’d never tip in that scenario either.

I just went to Panera instead to get her lunch.

God help us all if the no tax on tips thing goes through.

    $2 haircuts with a mandatory $30 tip…

I remember when the standard tip was 15%. Somehow that got inflated to 20% even though the inflated food and drink prices are theoretically passed on to the tip. If they don't at least bring it to my table they get nothing. If I have to use a kiosk I might tip the kiosk a AAA battery. Buffets are a bit tricky but I am serous to the servers as I'm likely to be a return customer. Baristas get around a buck, they could really mess up your order.

just put the money in the cup at the icecream stand, the 16 year old is not paying tax on those tips.  i dont like the cc machines either, no one should be expected to tip until the food is in hand. im still waiting for the cashier at the supermarket to expect tips

If you use self-checkout you can tip yourself and get a tax write off.  Progress for sure!

Agreed. And the whole premise of tipping - payment in gratitude for services rendered - before receiving service is ridiculous. Why would I tip for service I haven’t yet received?

Love the European model - leave what is essentially some loose change at the table because the servers are already being paid a living wage.

Women’s hair is where the money is at. I knew several women making $2,500++ a day 20 years ago when I lived in Greensboro. No telling what they are knocking down these days. They basically had run off all of the men because they said it wasn’t worth their time to cut mens hair.

It opened my eyes quickly to the BS line that you need a college education to make money.

I was ran out of a salon for that reason. Tried a barber shop and they are so busy you need a appointment, so I found a hole in the wall, they do a good job, I’m not sure what he charges but I just give him a 20.

For haircuts I use a franchise around here called Great clips. Maybe they are nationwide? The ONLY reason that I use them is they have an app. I can view the wait times of each location and sign myself up on the wait list for any of the locations. There are three or four that are reasonable driving distances for me. I think their haircuts are about $20. Minimum tip by default is $5.  Since I have three boys, at Christmas time I bought one of their deal cards. A $14 haircut. I think I bought 20 of them. They are on this card. The quality of the haircut... Is hit or miss.

That's who I use, so they stretch as far as UT at least; yeah the online app is great.  Haircut is $18 for me, with military discount, and (as I stated above) a $5 tip for a 7-minute haircut is just too much (that's more than I made as a sr. engineer).

I used to get my haircut on base ($8 with a $2 tip) but that stopped with COVID (they shut down completely, then only did AD military a year later); need to check if they're open to us worthless retirees yet (driving on-base, it does look like most office workers are still working from home (!)).

My wife's friend was a hair stylist at one point and she showed my wife the ropes on how to cut my hair. I invested in a good set of clippers around 10 years ago and haven't looked back.

This brings back memories.  I grew up in a tiny farming town.  Only barber was an old army barber.  No matter what you wanted you got a high and tight.  I was home visiting recently and needed a trim.  Swung by and old Gene’s  barbershop is still slinging the same fade.  He’s got to be mid 70s these days.  $14 and 7 minutes, the wife didn’t  believe me it was decent so snagged a selfie for proof (edit I guess it’s at the top #vanilla)

We’re right in the muck and bullets part of the season.  Fatigue, optimism, reinforcements, tactical switches and thinly spread resources on wide fronts - some will prosper and some will fade. While Liverpool remain clear at the top, many teams are rotating through the also-ran spaces,  down south the relegation candidates are only embellishing their credentials for championship football next year.

    Saturday

Forest v Brighton : a shuddering 5-0 reverse last week for Forest could be the turning point, but this match is an optimal test of their minerals. The filthy Seagulls are hit and miss, and a win either way will be the most indicative outcome, 2-1 with a side order of 1-1

Bournemouth v Liverpool : no easy jaunt to the South Coast for the Reds as the Cherries have hit their straps. Demolition of Forest last week and the away win at Toon before that is big news. A home win busts open the title race. 1-0

Everton v Leicester : The Foxes win at Spurs can be put down to Spurs being Spurs - so an unreliable sample.  The Toffees are finding a way, big win at the Filthies last week but have lost two key players form their attack.  0-0.

Ipswich v Southampton : well, this could be the absolute definition of a pyrrhic victory - assuming it’s not a draw.  Form says home win, so 1-0.

Newcastle v Fulham : The Cottagers are highly erratic while Toon are finding a rhythm, 2-0 and they stay in the Champions League hunt.

Wolves v Villa : this may be a local derby but the hosts are in abject form while Villa, not quite the team of last season, are undefeated in their last 5 and have qualified in the Champions League.  0-2

    Sunday

Brentford v Spurs : The Bees are lumpy could be a home win, or not - but more than likely So 2-2 because it’s Spurs.

Man Utd v Palace : similar seasons from opposite directions, with Palace starting low and climbing while Utd have plummeted.  Tough test for both 1-1

Arsenal v Man City : this ought to be a good game with Citeh’s league form coming back while the Gunners are consistently almost good enough to be top, but not quite. There’s a strong risk that they will nullify each other, though. 1-1

    Monday

Chelsea v West Ham, return of the Potter home with his new charges from the east side of London.  Should be a rounding home win, 2-0.

    Go bet the farm!

Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay
