Just to clarify: “extravagance” doesn’t have to mean something that costs an awful lot of money. It’s something that you spend more on than others might.

The clarification jogged my thinking. This past summer I picked up a 22 cm Italian marble mortar and olive wood pestle. I use it very regulary to make pesto and aioli and such. Compelely unnecessary, but I love the thing.Coleman, Texas

We also have an excessive supply of Radko Christmas ornaments, but it pales in comparison to the horse business (is it?) extravagance. My favorite Radko ornaments are the little green pickles - we play "hide the pickle" each year with interesting results...

This however was the most money I ever spent on myself- and in the 14 months Ive owned it its cost me almost another grand fixing the sh!t I keep breaking.
And as soon as my (Bike) Dealer gets one back in stock I will be buying a Gravel Bike that costs even more. Cant believe I got SWMBO permission for this one.My main rig is almost all pla$tic. 28lbs with 160mm/150mm f/r travel. I want to build a new one but everything is backed up in the industry because of the covid surge.Even my little dude’s bike was $500 but it’s feather light with a belt drive instead of a chain. -

After putting myself through college and getting commissioned as a 2Lt, I took $500 in cash out just to know what it felt like to have that much money in my pocket. Went to the mall and bought two pairs of jeans and a couple golf polos. Then, went to the grocery store and bought name-brand boxed cereal...not the stuff in a bag. I am 100% serious when I say that I felt like a king.
Far from an extravagance, given my current status, but that’s a solid memory.LBGE since June 2012

Doesn't count as extravagance as such, but it's the most I've spent on a person at one time. Worth every damn penny.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

I bought some nice groceries too, but the rest went to a much-needed car repair.___________"They're eating the checks! They're eating the balances!"

The diamond on my wife’s hand and the ones one her earlobes. The ear rings, I bought when I was in grad school from a chain jewelry store. She had moved out of state and 11 hours from family in what turned out to be a rough year for her as she didn’t acclimate to the new location very well at first. She wore those ear rings if she left the house/apartment. Fast forward maybe 4 years and she lost one. I honestly still expect to find it some day in the house. She was devastated as she didn’t believe I would ever buy another pair. Our ninth anniversary, I secretly borrowed the one ear ring she still had, took it to a local jeweler and had them find a match. They had to reset the original diamond because they could not get a matching setting and ended up costing me more than the original pair by almost 2x. Worth every penny, she wears them any day she leaves the house.

A few years back one of the big Canadian bands, The Tragically Hip had a farewell concert tour because their lead singer was dying. My wife was away at a charity cycling event for the weekend and it was just me and my university aged daughter at home one night having dinner when the TV was playing some highlights of the band. My daughter asks "why aren't you going, you have been to so many of their concerts?". Truth was I tried to buy tickets when they went on sale but prices climbed too fast and too high. So, now I was a bottle of wine deep looking at even higher prices. Of course, my daughter the enabler was trying to score a ticket herself so off we went on stub hub. As a side bar my daughter joined my wife on the Saturday ride for the first time at this event. At the starting line I told her not to ride too hard, we have to go to the Hip concert tonight. She was very surprised and happy, daughter had a great time too. That was $2K I don't regret.
