A Week of Keto: Spoilers, Nobody Died

  • @SonVolt I thought the same thing when I heard of this initially. Then my wife (exercise science and nutrition major) explained that excessive meat can turn into glucose in your body and be processed similar to a carb, hence why Keto says moderate protein so your body can continue to stay in Ketosis.

It's been an odd transition. Mostly chicken, fish and pork. But not in a "I'm going to eat half a chicken" way. It's definitely different.

Now I'm just gonna sit here on my lunch break and eat my Tuna and Cucumbers while staring at foodporn on the forum.

I scanned this quickly and thought it read "A Week of KETO: Spiders, Nobody Died" and I thought, "OK that's it. These food trends have gone too far."

Interesting. I think a lot my success with the diet, even if I'm not necessarily staying in ketosis,  is through the calorie reduction alone from cutting out simple carbs. I can really pack on some calories with crap like cereal, crackers, bread etc, and to a less extent, rice and potatoes.

One thing I do like about low-carb tho is it forces me to be creative and to seek out foods I wouldn't typically pick up at the supermarket. Rutabagas? Hey, let's give it a try... turns out they're delicious!

I'm on my 3rd week of low-carbing it, trying to drop some weight before our beach trip in Sept. I looked into Keto but the "moderate to low protein" scared me off. If I'm cutting out carbs - one of my favorite foods groups - I'm going to absolutely gorge myself on the proteins to make up for it.
Cutting carbs works.  It just does.  But my experience is you gotta keep protein up.  Portions make all the difference.  And I hate to have to call out the bitter truth:  quitting alcohol is one of the most effective ways to lose weight (and save $).  Don't hate me, people.

I don't accept the low-carb panacea. It does work, but isn't necessary. Moderation is key. I know many tout low-carb as the "most effective" but in reality, the most effective is a lifestyle change one will stick with. Most diets fail because elimination diets take things away that for the vast majority of people have been used as rewards. There is a reason our brains react to sugar the same way we react to opiates. Dopamine is fun! Ultimately, do whatever is most effective for you in a safe manner.

I'm not looking for a lifestyle change, I'm looking to drop a couple pounds for the beach. I'll be back to eating cabs when it's over. I don't have a weight issue, this is purely vanity.

Consuming more calories than your body burns leads to weight gain.

Consuming fewer calories than your body burns leads to weight reduction.

Obviously it's calories in / calories out... but unless you want to break out the digital scale and tabulate the caloric breakdown for everything you eat, picking a dieting framework like Keto, where you're not counting macros, is much easier for people to follow. It's also far more satisfying... generally speaking.

  • One unexpected positive of going low carb diet for a while is the education of where all my calories (and resultant pounds) were coming from.

So we're giving it a try.

Don't know if we will sustain full Keto but we will certainly cut out a lot of carbs.

Changed my normal breakfast from an English Muffin with fresh ground peanut butter, sliced banana and a drizzle of honey (which was a carb bomb) to a egg scramble with cherry tomatoes and shredded cheddar.

Lunch was a pan grilled chicken breast with sliced cherry tomatoes, sliced avocado, burrata cheese and fresh basil.

Dinner was a similar meal as posted above.

Swiss burger on a lettuce bun with mustard and the eggplant with mushrooms and shredded parm.

    We'll see how this goes.

Weight this AM is 205. I'm 6'2" so that's not too bad but I have belly fat that I can't lose. Want to see 190-195 in a couple of months.

I do Orange Theory 4 days a week and am in pretty good condition overall.

Just can't stand that belly pushing through my shirts.

Thanks for the initial post @Killit_and_Grillit

  • I did keto hardcore for 18 months before slowly transitioning to a "normal" diet. I lost nearly 100 pounds, was no longer pre-diabetic, and my acid reflux went away. I gained some of the weight back when I re-introduced carbs, but not much. I was weary of processed carbs and only ate those one or two meals a week. Saved beer for the weekends only, too.

As of late, I've steered way off course. I still eat healthier than 90% of my friends, but the weight started coming back. And I exercise a lot; I make it to the gym five days out of seven and run 20 miles week.

My takeaways: everyone's body is different. Processed carbs are not good for mine. I gain weight more quickly than others with much worse diets when I'm eating (or drinking) bread and sugar. The super-restrictive diet that caused me to lose that weight, though, wasn't sustainable. Life's too short to only eat kale, and I love food. I was skinny but not very happy.

I'm trying to get back to that happy middle ground now, where I'm cautious of carbs and beer while also being able to enjoy a good pizza and craft beer occasionally.

Good luck, man. If nothing else, keto underscores the degree to which your body really is an input-output machine. You're capable of losing whatever weight you want to; keep it up if it's working.
  • Oh, I forgot to mention that I shared my diet with my primary care physician, and he was skeptical of what he called the "bacon diet" but also said that it's a great way to jumpstart weight loss. He asked that I check in once every three months for blood work so he could monitor how it affected my body. Great numbers every time; cholesterol stayed in the normal range and neither my kidney nor liver got overwhelmed by the fatty protein.
  • @dmchicago good luck! I’m 6’2 and the last time I was at 190 was leaving basic training. (I can give you the keys to success...but IMO not worth it!)

@GratefulJason I get it. I had 2 roommates at FT Leonardwood who lived on cheap beer, pizza, and steak. I would be shake, shake, dinner, 2 workouts. I looked at bread and 10 lbs. 100 lbs is a crazy accomplishment though, even if you’ve slinkied.

I think the biggest takeaway is I have never measured a portion in my life and have a better grasp of what “average” is. ’m from the South, we overeat then stick a biscuit in our pocket in case we have to go 2 hours until there is cornbread!

@Killit_and_Grillit. . Looks encouraging.  I've got to do something as well. I'm looking at going paleo. Like you I've ate like sh#÷% the past 6 years and its catching up with me more ways than one
  • Before I hurt my back again and had to have surgery, I had lost 30lbs doing low carb and internment fasting.  Well it’s been basically 2.5 months now and I have pretty much eaten what ever is brought to me since I have been layed up in bed. Just now getting to where I can walk around the house and move a little better. I have to lose weight since it’s not helping my back. Don’t really want to have a third surgery. For my body, low carb is the way to go. Not going to lie though. Pasta is my kryptonite.  Good luck fellas with the new eating life style.

Has anyone tried the new condiment diet?  All you eat is condiments.  And, depending on where you go, this can be totally free.

Back in high-school the wrestling team had what was known as the "Taco Bell Hot Sauce Diet" for cutting weight quickly.  You could sub in a  Wendy's chili sauce packet if you were feeling frisky.

Doc told me I had diabetes. Went Low Carb High Fat and after a couple of months my A1C dropped down in the prediabetes range. Still on and cant wait for my next checkup. Fully expect the diabetes to be gone.
