Thai Grilled Chicken (Gai Yang)

bgebrentbgebrent Posts: 16,457
I saw @CincyTiki post this awhile back and knew I had to try it.  My much better half and I love Thai food.  Fired up the MM and grilled them up.  This was very tasty and will get into the rotation.

Man you are cooking not just smoking. That is a smokin' good looking cook.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

  • Even the lime looks perfect. Nice cook, as always.

Looks really good - it's always interesting how recipes vary, yours doesn't have the cilantro that is the backbone of my gai yang marinade.  I'll have to give yours a spin sometime.

There's a generous cilantro finish but not in the marinade. I'll try yours likewise, thanks!

Nice cook. Love gai yang. I've tried the Serious Eats recipe in the past (with more garlic and Thai chillies) and it turned out well.

It was really good John.  Like @caliking states about the SE recipe, I'd increase the garlic next time.  I'll try the SE recipe as well.  Thanks.

  • Nice! Love this stuff.

we did some form of this at Austin Eggfest 2 years ago. I thought the toasted rice powder really added a cool secret little flavor on the finish. The Jeaw (fish sauce with all kinds of spices) added a lot too. Rice powder is easy (toast rice in skillet then grind). The Jeaw is a little more involved but I'll dig up the recipe if you want to try it. It's the same sauce they use in Crying Tiger (Thai steak) so it's a good one to know.

Read this post earlier today and ran to the store for ingredients.  It's been marinating for the 6 hours and now its time to throw it on the egg!
