Getting closer. About 9500ft. Ice already becoming a problem. Not everyone is equipped for an Ice climb, so likely no summit today. Still fab to be here. Wind is brisk and it is heavy, add that to ice, too risky to lead the climb without proper equipment. Give it a couple more hours to determine go/no go. See if the sun helps us out a little bit? Not looking forward to an icy boulder field to negotiate.
I decided to call it. Not worth the risk, and it proved to be a good move.
A snow storm above 13,000 hit. Unfortunately a party of climbers, local folks, decided to move forward and try the summit as we turned back.
We got back to Estes Park around 5:00pm.
At around 6:00pm a SAR helicopter flew over our house carrying an unfortunate climber in the external basket.
Protocol, typically, for such is external for fatalities, inside for injuries.
We read the Denver Post, and it confirmed the unfortunate news.
61 yo male from Colorado fell 150ft.
Sometimes it is better to be good than lucky. I think I actually spoke to him as we turned around and offered the trail.
I knew we would not summit, without a massive amount of stress for everyone.

Daughter baking cookies at her grandmas. I said she could have one cookie. Guess which one she made? She followed the letter of the law, if not the spirit.

My sister in law asked my 4 year old niece if she ate all the meat off her bone before getting a second helping. Her reply, "I ate all the chicken off the bone.""The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

I just got refused a ride on a kids train for being to "large". What is this a little mans world? My wife snapped a pic just as I started cussing and raising hell. I won the argument, I got to ride on the xuv. I wasn't leaving without a ride. Even if it was in a police car.
