Just finished a decoy for an upcoming hunt. Not a day too soon.

Keel to be applied later tonight
You seem to do a lot of these.  Are they reusable?  A lot of beautiful work if they have to be replaced often.

@Botch. They have a working life of approximately 15 years . Use them each trip based on specie I’m targeting.
    Thanks for the kind words

PSA check your dryer vents. I normally do every 6 months and just did a month ago. I am finishing the laundry room finally and had to completely disassemble the duct work for the first time in 3 or 4 years. Normally i just shove a vacuum in both ends and call it good. Found this pile of lint/shepherd fur mid-run. Could have been ugly.

Interesting!  How many duck breeds do you hunt, and what is your current total number of decoys?

Actually not as many as you would think. I’m a slow carver and between 7 additional hobbies and work I don’t get to carve as much as I would like.

I spent about 2 years to where I didn’t touch a block of wood … and I feel like it shows.

    I have 9 blue wings 4 black ducks . 2 goldeneye about 6 mallards , 6 woodies an eider and 2 canvasbacks.
I have a random assortment of Argentina species as well when I went down there.

I’ve carve about a dozen more… but most of those were either gifts or trade birds for hunts etc

I’m hooked on the duck hunting pretty bad. I migrate every season.. have leases in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi and a local wood duck swamp here in Alabama.

on top of those I usually take one big trip a year..
2017 I went to Washington Coast
2018 I went to Idaho to hunt with a friend and then down to Argentina,
2019 I went up to Manitoba
2020 went to Maine and got some Atlantic sea ducks off my list
This year I’m going back out to Washington to hunt with my buddy but we’re staying by his house and chasing canvasbacks, goldeneye and wigeon. Hopefully a Eurasian widgeon will get lost this year

I have 30 species of ducks mounted in my house . My girlfriend is suprsisingly ok with it… she says at least they are pretty to look at and she would rather me do that than spend money chasing other wild women and gambling
  • @DuckDogDr care to share a couple pics of your favorite mounts sometime?

Wow!  You are much more intense into duck hunting than I am into photography.  Kudos!
And as @Dawgfan said, would love to see some pics!

This deserves its own thread!  Would love to see some of the decoys.  I love handmade duck decoys.  They can be displayed as art and used too.

Lol, we used to do that as kids for fun.  You can fling a lid open so fast it flips the grill onto its back.  My friends dad was very unhappy when he caught is doing that.

Smoking mutton over cherry in the MMX

That looks really good. When I was a kid my grandma Mema used to cook mutton all the time.

Our neighbor and good friend Deven (AKA "Red Girl" - the infamous brisket camp photo) was walking her dog this weekend.

"Breaux" is a very good natured young stray that she adopted about a year ago.  He goes everywhere she goes.  He's a small mutt around 12 lbs.

During that walk, an unleashed dog attacked Breaux viciously.  Deven got in the middle of it and was bitten on both hands.  She dropped to her knees in the scuffle on to hard brick.

So she went to the ER for stiches on both hands, Breaux went to the animal ER for a couple hours of surgery (more needed but he's home after a day).

The dogs owner is a drug addict who lives with her dad.  Cops came but didn't do anything, said to call animal control on Monday.

She dropped by our place on her way home from the hospital, could hardly talk without crying.  We hooked her up with dinner, dessert and copious wine.

I'm skeptical this dog was vaccinated, I suppose all this will be sorted out in the coming days but she may need the rabies shot series.

As an animal lover I'm torn.  Obviously the owner is irresponsible and uncaring and this dog is clearly a hazard to public safety.   I would not be surprised if all the medical bills are well in the 5 digits.  This dog needs to go to "the farm".

Deven has both hands bandaged and her knees are "killing her", and Breaux's injuries are pretty gruesome,  I'm not going to post.  Hopefully Breaux will pull through his next surgery and the healing process but he's maimed for life.

That sucks @nolaegghead. Sometimes it’s the owner that needs to go to the “farm” and not the animal. Hopefully animal control sorts it out. I see an attorney getting involved to make things right for both your friend and her pooch

Thanks.  I'm pretty sure these people are dirt poor, but we are flush with lawyers that are willing to help.  She has insurance through the SAG, but I know that vet bill is going to be massive.  Hope this doesn't keep her from working - she's a stunt coordinator and has a pretty lucrative contract right now.

@nolaegghead  Horrible turn of events for your neighbor and her dog.  Wishing the best for them.
When we take the Beagles for a walk a pepper spray canister usually goes with us, for just the situation you describe.
The owners of the attacking dog are fully to blame here, but the dog will likely pay the price for their irresponsibility.

@nolaegghead very sorry for your friend and her dog.  An awful situation.  I am glad she was able to save her dog, and that she has a good support group.  Hopefully something will be done about the dangerous dog and irresponsible owner.
