First the units are wrong for batteries. It should be GWhrs. How many we need would vary according to which power sources we keep, more for solar as it generates only 12 hrs a day, somewhat less for wind. For nuclear it generates 24/7 but batteries could make better use of the excess electricity generated at night. But batteries are not free so the question is how much are you willing to spend? Anyhow if it were 20.7 GWhrs that would be less than the night time generation of 2 nuclear power plants. The batteries in EVs are another source of storage.

I remember reading about tapping geothermal energy way back, like, gradeschool. Did a quick search to see what country uses the most; it's the US, followed by Indonesia. Back around 1970 it was Iceland, so I modified my search, and currently anywhere between 66 and 90% of home heating there is from thermal energy, with overall energy supply somewhat lower (hoses to drive your car get expensive). The funny thing is that it requires fracking. At least according to the newspaper article that I read a few days ago. Haven’t some states banned fracking? At one time Harris said that she was opposed to fracking.

That is a question. Along with what exactly are they going to pump in to frack the rock for geothermal power? Maybe John’s grad student could answer the question. The basic technology is similar but they aren’t fracking into natural gas formations, and the working fluids are fairly different. Given how far down the formations are and the objectives, the risk of triggering micro earthquakes is significantly smaller.Gulfcoastguy said:

The major environmental issues with fracking for natural gas are that it’s still a fossil fuel and there can be significant methane leaks. There are also concerns about the storage of the working fluids at the surface, contamination of the groundwater, etc. None of this is at play for EGS."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike
