  • They're screwed on windless cloudy days, right?  ;)
That would depend on how much battery back up or natural gas surge generators they have.

I've gotta admit that in my younger days I never assigned a weather factor to the screwed experience.  But I was so much younger then... Climate change was definitely not a topic.  It is post Friday... =)
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

    How much do we need?
    Love you bro!
  • First the units are wrong for batteries. It should be GWhrs. How many we need would vary according to which power sources we keep, more for solar as it generates only 12 hrs a day, somewhat less for wind. For nuclear it generates 24/7 but batteries could make better use of the excess electricity generated at night. But batteries are not free so the question is how much are you willing to spend? Anyhow if it were 20.7 GWhrs that would be less than the night time generation of 2 nuclear power plants. The batteries in EVs are another source of storage.

  • I actually have a PhD student working on EGS

I remember reading about tapping geothermal energy way back, like, gradeschool.  Did a quick search to see what country uses the most; it's the US, followed by Indonesia.  Back around 1970 it was Iceland, so I modified my search, and currently anywhere between 66 and 90% of home heating there is from thermal energy, with overall energy supply somewhat lower (hoses to drive your car get expensive).  Nice solution if you live in the right spot of the globe.

If undocumented immigrants are "freeloaders" mooching off the system, why are ICE agents raiding workplaces to find them?

That last sentence is the key to understanding what is changing with Enhanced Geothermal Systems: they can be put in place almost anywhere.

  • The funny thing is that it requires fracking. At least according to the newspaper article that I read a few days ago. Haven’t some states banned fracking? At one time Harris said that she was opposed to fracking.

Is fracking fundamentally bad or is it the chemicals they pump in that can impact water supplies?
    Love you bro!

That is a question. Along with what exactly are they going to pump in to frack the rock for geothermal power? Maybe John’s grad student could answer the question. I’m not fundamentally opposed to the project but I would like them to lay their cards on the table before these rigs sprout like mushrooms after the rain.

The basic technology is similar but they aren’t fracking into natural gas formations, and the working fluids are fairly different.  Given how far down the formations are and the objectives, the risk of triggering micro earthquakes is significantly smaller.

The major environmental issues with fracking for natural gas are that it’s still a fossil fuel and there can be significant methane leaks.  There are also concerns about the storage of the working fluids at the surface, contamination of the groundwater, etc.  None of this is at play for EGS.

I agree. We should all live like cavemen and give the government all the money and power they seek without question. lol. Because as we know we never had storms before the industrial revolution.

it has to be climate change because god promised to never do it again

God binds himself to a covenant with Noah and his descendants, promising never to destroy the earth by flood (Gen. 9:8-17). God gives the rainbow as a sign of his promise =)

As far I know the earth wasn’t destroyed.

Hmmm? Since it was just Noah, his wife, their offspring and theirs if they had any I guess that family tree stopped branching.
