    gps takes people to a dead end road maybe less than a third mile from the house. im on the other side of another dead end jumping up and down flailing my arms trying to get their attention. the two roads were connected in the 1800's. time for them to update the old gazeteer/atlas and get a AAA map

    For discussion: Do North Americans use the left lane correctly? When on past travels in Europe, the left lane is strictly for passing; no excuses (as it should be). Even had some experiences in Tuscany where a slow driver in the left lane paced the other three lanes to the right, paralyzingly the highway.

    In North America, you so often see loafers in the left lane, with no distinction relative to the other lanes. 

    What say you? Am I off base?

    You are spot on. In Illinois they even passed a law stating that it was illegal to be in the left lane (highway/interstate) unless you are passing.  It didn’t work. Still get douchecanoes slowing traffic while texting in the left lane.

    The left lane is for loitering.  The left shoulder is strictly for passing.

    Fairly bold move here potentially blowing up your own thread.  Kudos for that.

    The answer is no. It’s been a problem forever, but these days when people are stuck in tunnel vision and don’t have much of any consideration for how their decisions impact other people… it’s much worse.  Moving out of that lane would require some folks to pay attention to what people *behind them* are doing, and Americans seem almost genetically incapable of that at this point.

    i only pull out of the left lane when someone comes up behind me. my old truck had a 125 hp engine, the middle lane was a trap of illegal cell phone users driving 40 mph. if i got stuck in that lane behind someone driving 40 mph there was no way to pull out into speeding traffic to the left or the right lane for that matter. florida drivers up here are an accident waiting to happen. no highway patrol still up here, theres alot still in the hundred plus miles per hour club

    Locally on I10 the middle lane is full of RVs and trucks with a 65 mph governor. They don’t want to deal with the on and off ramp traffic in the right lane. The left lane is full of steroid raging daredevils. I just grit my teeth and hold on until I get out of the urban areas.

    I had a similar situation yesterday. It was my nieces birthday so we went and picked up my wife's Grandma beforehand. I was flying down the highway and passing cars. My wife's Grandma was sitting shotgun. I had to mention to her that I was only going 8 miles over the speed limit and I really wasn't driving that fast as it might have appeared. I was eventually passed by someone going 80+ a minute or two later. "See, I'm not going that fast!"

    If your going to transition to a faster lane then you should ease up to make some space, floor it when you see your opening in the mirror and merge in at the target speed so no one has to look up from their phones.

    what i dont get is the guy that does 6 lane changes to get 2 cars ahead of me and uses every inch of available space. almost like he had every maneuver planned out ahead of time and just goes for it
