OT - What are you doing right now?

Shot some model rockets off in the yard this morning, then us and the neighbor shot off a bunch of old fireworks on opposite sides of the pond. Social distancing you know.

Not a bad step if they teach lay out and not just how to weld ....Geometry is a great start

Here's my 2 options. I guess I should start with the Basic course as I know zilch about welding at the moment. 

Basic Arc Welding

This course is designed for the beginning welder who has limited or no welding experience. The emphasis is on basic practical welding of steel for home or farm use. Safety will be emphasized with supervised lab practice in gas welding, cutting, and arc welding. Various welding equipment and welding techniques will be surveyed. Welding equipment and consumables are included.

Advanced Welding

This course is designed for the basic welder who has introductory welding experience. The emphasis is on welding of various materials and techniques. Student chosen projects are often included in this course. Safety will be emphasized with supervised lab practice in gas welding and arc welding. Welding equipment and consumables are included. Minimum enrollment required.

The spring class was cancelled so this would be for June, assuming we're over this shiz by then.

I also think a crappy welder is terrible to learn on. They are often difficult to weld with for anyone. Buy a decent one if you are getting one. I presume you want to MIG weld mild steel?

My father-in-law is a pipe fitter and has all the equipment on the farm I can use. I'd ask him to teach me but he's a little short on patience (to put it politely), so I thought I'd learn from an instructor initially.

I wish I would have learned how to stick weld. 

I took a welding class over at the community college when I was in high school with my friend. My teacher Jeff was pretty much gifted the job as his dad was the hydraulic teacher at the college forever.  I could probably count on one hand the total days we spent actually learning something about welding. I think we spent one week building a small bridge using a tig welder to test its durability. Otherwise we just goofed around as Jeff was a young teacher and didn't really care. Most of the time we helped him with his own personal projects. Jeff was a super smart guy and would have all these off the wall ideas. I remember helping him turn a big commercial size walk behind mower into a remote control lawnmower. By the end of the school term he was outside driving it around with a remote control. Other times we would retread his wheels on his full frame tube chassis 4x4 he made by scratch. If we had random projects we could bring them in and work on it. Nothing really ever to do with welding. Jeff was always working on crazy projects. At the time he was driving an Isuzu truck that he welded two cabs together. Just because he could. 

Looking back I don't regret taking the class as it was one of the most fun classes I took in high school. Jeff was just fun to watch and listen to. I just wish we learned something about welding!

I ran across my teacher Jeff years later on the news. He clearly hasn't changed. They were doing a story on him and his friend making motor powered barbie power wheels. He hasn't changed one bit!

as I read the post and glancing at the picture I read Jeff had Really Changed I quickly assumed Jeff became June, my bad for glancing over it.............still made me laugh to myself 

How much practice would it take before giving something like this a shot? Minus the trailer. I sent an email to the company in Texas requesting a quote on the model below and they said $17,999. I don't know who they're fooling, but I would have thought $4k tops...
