Shot some model rockets off in the yard this morning, then us and the neighbor shot off a bunch of old fireworks on opposite sides of the pond. Social distancing you know.

Makin' shrimp stock:
Stir-fry raw shrimp shells, tails (and heads if you have them) until they turn nice and orange-y, then simmer in water to cover ten minutes, strain and refrigerate. I had a stub of fresh ginger that got my fingers too close to my Micro-Plane, so I sliced it thinly and included that.
Some kinda shrimp dish for lunch tomorrow!___________"When small men begin to cast big shadows, it means that the sun is about to set."

That's funny because a good buddy of mine is an Indiana State Trooper. He says they aren't even bothering with speeders or minor violations. Still sitting and running radar, but if anything, they'll flip their lights on to get you to slow down

Thinking about signing up for an intro to welding night class at the local community college. Would love to learn how to make my own smokers and outdoor cooking equipment. Would this be the ideal first step?South of Nashville - BGE XL - Alfresco 42" ALXE - Alfresco Versa Burner - Sunbeam Microwave

I was thinking this is a perfect time to max out your project car to find top speed. But I saw like 3 cops gunning for speeders yesterday in their hideouts. On an interstate...XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr.

Here's my 2 options. I guess I should start with the Basic course as I know zilch about welding at the moment.Basic Arc Welding
This course is designed for the beginning welder who has limited or no welding experience. The emphasis is on basic practical welding of steel for home or farm use. Safety will be emphasized with supervised lab practice in gas welding, cutting, and arc welding. Various welding equipment and welding techniques will be surveyed. Welding equipment and consumables are included.
Advanced Welding
This course is designed for the basic welder who has introductory welding experience. The emphasis is on welding of various materials and techniques. Student chosen projects are often included in this course. Safety will be emphasized with supervised lab practice in gas welding and arc welding. Welding equipment and consumables are included. Minimum enrollment required.South of Nashville - BGE XL - Alfresco 42" ALXE - Alfresco Versa Burner - Sunbeam Microwave -

I would watch a bunch of you tube videos before your first class. Welding isn't hard, but it simply takes time doing it over and over. Do you have a welder yet? I also think a crappy welder is terrible to learn on. They are often difficult to weld with for anyone. Buy a decent one if you are getting one. I presume you want to MIG weld mild steel?XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr.

My father-in-law is a pipe fitter and has all the equipment on the farm I can use. I'd ask him to teach me but he's a little short on patience (to put it politely), so I thought I'd learn from an instructor initially.South of Nashville - BGE XL - Alfresco 42" ALXE - Alfresco Versa Burner - Sunbeam Microwave -

Looking back I don't regret taking the class as it was one of the most fun classes I took in high school. Jeff was just fun to watch and listen to. I just wish we learned something about welding!
I ran across my teacher Jeff years later on the news. He clearly hasn't changed. They were doing a story on him and his friend making motor powered barbie power wheels. He hasn't changed one bit!

the basic course would be fine, but you need to practice. you can pretty much weld a smoker all in the flat position. buy a box of 6011 1/8 dia and burn thru the box. its a farmers rod, burns thru paint rust etc. if he sees you practicing he is more likely to look over your shoulder

It has been said on here before, if you can run a hot glue gun you can mig weld. The only pointers I can give you are prep work and cleanliness are of upmost importance, like painting a car. Get a auto darkening helmet from TSC if your father in law does not have one. Depending on your set up keep a fire extinguisher handy.

How much practice would it take before giving something like this a shot? Minus the trailer. I sent an email to the company in Texas requesting a quote on the model below and they said $17,999. I don't know who they're fooling, but I would have thought $4k tops...
