OT - Austin BBQ - Micklethwait

@20stonespice and I grabbed lunch at Micklethwait Craft Meats earlier today. We drove by this place called Franklin, where the line was pretty short, and the pressure was on for Micklethwait to deliver.

Duuuuuude.

Of the big Austin spots, I’ve now had Franklin*, La Barbeque*, Valentina’s **, and Stiles Switch***....and the winner is.....

...ME!

I almost had Terry Black’s (didn’t want to wait for dinner), and will soon. It is <0.5 from the casa, so I’m sure I’ll get to it.

Even worse, the Texas Monthly BBQ Festival was in my “back yard” at the park that hosted the Beto rally with Willie awhile back, and I was too lazy to go.  We are just spoiled rotten here, and trying not to take it for granted.

* Away games - eaten at festivals in Houston.
** Breakfast and lunch, and they’re both awesome
*** Brought into the office (and their cobbler is unreal)

    Got one.  It's pretty good.

FYI, for those traveling in Texas, the Texas Monthly BBQ app is super helpful.

You read me like a book.  I assume you are more of a vinegar/pork guy (which is good in its own right), but we are pretty spoiled here.

Not at all- I have really grown to appreciate Texas bbq. I am jealous of the options you all have.  I stood in line for 6 hrs at Franklins and I would do it again in a minute.

The line at Micklethwait today (which is just down the street from Franklin, and as good/nearly as good/better)

FYVM for you locals.  Haven't been there since Dec '16 but will do an expanded tour Spring '19.  It is all good, like other activities, some are better than others  =)

For argument's sake, how different is it from Valentina's?

From a trailer perspective, it is very similar. The food was also awesome, better than the lunch at V’s maybe, by a small margin.

They will be opening a restaurant in Smithville soon.   I think they still plan on serving out of the trailer in Austin.  The pit will be in Smithville.  The sausage selection varies from day to day and is made in house.

Sorry, that was snark, based on the Valentina's pictures I posted last week.

We ended up just going out Saturday, and was booked up showing my father in law around.  We did get PART of a lap around lunch time.

I am sorry I missed you this time around.

Pro tip: if you wait more than 10 minutes for BBQ in Austin, you’re waiting way to long for BBQ in Austin. Franklin is awesome, as are many other places. Look around. Enjoy.

  • Sorry I missed meeting you too. We'll no doubt be there again next year. We're going to Daytona in the morning for the last race of the season. That a good looking 2002.

Thanks.  My father-in-law bought it new in 1974.  My brother-in-law had it for about 30 years and we've had it for eight.  We went a little crazy on a restoration a few years ago, and now it's pretty sharp.
