"Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed a lawsuit yesterday to block former President Trump from the 2024 Republican primary ballot in Colorado, citing the 14th Amendment’s ban on insurrectionists holding public office. “Because Trump swore an oath to ‘preserve, protect and defend’ the Constitution upon assuming the Office of the President on January 20, 2017 and then engaged in insurrection against the Constitution on and around January 6, 2021, he is disqualified under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment from ‘hold[ing] any office … under the United States,’ including the Office of the President,” the lawsuit says. Marshall Cohen reports for CNN.
District Judge Lewis Kaplan in New York ruled yesterday that former President Trump was liable a second time for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump is liable following his disparaging comments he made in 2019 after she accused him of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s. James Fanelli reports for the Wall Street Journal.
New York state judge Arthur Engoron yesterday rejected former President Trump’s bid to delay his fraud trial scheduled Oct. 2. Jonathan Stempel reports for Reuters. "

Seemed like Peter Navarro was almost in tears in his post verdict press conference moments ago. LOL.

He deserves everything he's gonna get. Here is a more material:
"Peter Navarro convicted of contempt of Congress
The former Trump advisor faced two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with a subpoena from the House committee overseeing the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Navarro's first charge stemmed from a failure to produce documents requested by the Jan. 6 committee. The second is for a failure to appear for a deposition.
Prosecutors argued at trial that Navarro willfully defied congressional subpoenas.
“The defendant chose allegiance to former President Trump over compliance with the subpoena,”Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Aloi said in closing remarks.
Navarro attorney Stan Woodward is requesting a mistrial, arguing jurors who went outside on a break were exposed to protesters. The judge is demanding evidence for the claim.
Woodward had tried to claim executive privilege at trial, saying it prevented Navarro from testifying, but the judge barred the argument from use, ruling there was no evidence of it being invoked.
Navarro is the second ally of former President Trump to be convicted in relation to defying the Jan. 6 committee.
Former White House adviser Steve Bannon was convicted of two contempts of Congress earlier this year and sentenced to four months in prison, time he has not yet served pending an appeal.
The Jan. 6 committee, seven Democrats and two Republicans, wrapped up its business at the end of last year after concluding Trump sought to overturn the 2020 election and incited an insurrection.
The Navarro conviction is the latest battle in the Jan. 6 cases, in which the Department of Justice has charged more than 1,100 defendants who rioted at the Capitol.
Trump is also facing charges from a special counsel related to Jan. 6 and in another case for his alleged efforts to overturn the election in Georgia.
On Thursday, Trump signaled he may ask to move the case in Georgia to federal court, which could broaden the jury pool.

Former President Trump inflated his annual net worth by as much as $3.6 billion, according to court filings by New York Attorney General Letitia James, as part of her civil fraud allegations against Trump. James previously said Trump’s annual net worth from 2011 to 2021 was inflated by between $812 million and $2.2 billion. James Fanelli reports for the Wall Street Journal.

Something to ponder-(not my writing):"As we mark the twenty-second anniversary of 9/11, a moment in history that unified Americans and violently awakened us to the terrorist threat from abroad, we find ourselves living through the aftershocks of Jan 6, a moment in history that divided Americans and violently awakened us to the threat from within. For most of us, nestled comfortably in our silos of homogeneity, those with different views on that awful day are only encountered in news articles, public polls, or political reactions to the latest indictment. For some, though, this American divide hits home. "After rioters stormed the Capitol, relatives and friends who disagreed with their actions faced a difficult choice: Should they turn their loved ones over to authorities? Could they continue to have relationships with people accused of trying to interfere with the peaceful transition of power? Divisions that had been growing since the election of Donald Trump to the presidency were torn even wider in living rooms and family group chats across the country. Roughly 15 percent of the more than 1,100 people charged for actions on Jan. 6, 2021, were turned in by family members, friends or acquaintances. Most of us knew that Trump's election claims were lies. We'll likely soon learn beyond a reasonable doubt that Trump, his co-defendants, and their countless indicted co-conspirators knew the big lie was just that. But it will take more than the truth to extract the venom that has soaked into the American fabric and—in some cases—the American family."

"Former President Trump’s lawyers asked District Judge Tanya Chutkan, overseeing the federal election interference case, to recuse herself due to her criticism of the Jan. 6 attack. If successful, the court clerk will randomly assign this case to another district judge. Trump is also asking Chutkan not to rule on any other pending motions until his recusal request is resolved. C. Ryan Barber and Jan Wolfe report for the Wall Street Journal.
Former President Trump’s lawyers yesterday asked the judge in his Georgie election interference case to throw out most of the 13 charges against him. The one-page motion refers to a more comprehensive one also filed yesterday that states the “defects” in the indictment are “voluminous.” The longer motion also says that the charge of violating Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act seeks to “punish protected First Amendment activity” while failing to “sufficiently allege the existence” of a racketeering enterprise to overturn the election. Richard Fausset and Danny Hakim report for the New York Times. "

The new axis of evil?
SEP 13, 2023
Vladimir Putin claimed Tuesday that the criminal cases against Trump were part of “the persecution of a political rival for political reasons.” (For the record, in the same address Putin also praised Elon Musk, as if we needed any more evidence of whose side Musk is on.)
Trump latched on to Putin’s comments, posting early today on his social media platform that:
“President Vladimir Putin of Russia is using Crooked Joe Biden’s illegal Banana Republic style treatment of his Political Opponent, who is beating him badly in the Polls, to condemn America and all of the good things it once stood for. The whole World is watching as the USA is being torn apart by dreams of Election Interference!”
Meanwhile, Trump continues to maintain that he and Putin are on good terms despite Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which Trump once described as “genius” and “savvy.”
Recall that throughout Trump’s presidency, Trump licked Putin’s backside. During the 2018 summit in Helsinki, Trump refused to support the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia had interfered in the 2016 presidential election, and professed to trust the Russian leader more than his own intelligence services.
In January, in a post on his Truth Social website, Trump again suggested that he had been right to trust the Russian president more than U.S. intelligence and F.B.I. “lowlifes.”
Just after Putin made his Tuesday comments in defense of Trump, Putin met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who expressed his “total support” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “I hope that we will always stand together in the fight against imperialism,” Kim said.
Kim is another dictator whom Trump praised during his presidency, noting that Kim wrote him “beautiful letters.”
Bad enough that Trump praised Putin during Trump’s presidency. To grant Putin any moral authority now is further evidence of Trump’s sympathies for, if not complicity in, an authoritarian axis.
Since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Putin has cracked down on dissent. Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was convicted last month of “extremism” and sentenced to 19 years (on top of an existing 11-year sentence) in a special regime prison colony that keeps prisoners in cells with the lights constantly on, and barred from speaking. Navalny will be prohibited from receiving family visits or letters for ten years.
In April, Russian British human rights activist Vladimir Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison on treason and other charges for criticizing Russia’s war on Ukraine. “Such is the price for speaking up in Russia today,” Kara-Murza said in his last court statement.
And, of course, Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin met his fiery death alongside other Wagner leaders, almost certainly an assassination because of Prigozhin’s an attempted coup.
So much for Putin’s criticism of America for holding Trump legally accountable for Trump’s attempted coup.
As former Wyoming congresswoman Liz Cheney put it, “Putin has now officially endorsed the Putin-wing of the Republican Party.”

"Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee yesterday ruled that former President Trump will not be tried alongside two of his co-defendants who requested a speedy trial for next month in the Georgia election interference case. Severing the trial of Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro from that of Trump and the other co-defendants was a “procedural and logistical inevitability,” McAfee said. Jan Wolfe and Mariah Timms report for the Wall Street Journal.
The New York state appellate court has put former President Trump’s fraud trial on hold, following a request by Trump, until the lower court judge overseeing the case rules on issues surrounding the statute of limitations. The decision may mean that the $250 million fraud trial might not begin as scheduled on Oct. 2. Kara Scannell reports for CNN.
Special Counsel Jack Smith yesterday opposed former President Trump’s bid to remove District Judge Tanya Chutkan overseeing the federal criminal election interference case, saying the request has “no valid basis.” Trump said Chutkan should recuse herself over prior statements she made in court concerning the Jan. 6 attack. Andrew Goudsward reports for Reuters. "

"Former President Trump has said it was his decision to try to overturn the 2020 election results and push the false narrative that he won the presidency. Kate Sullivan reports for CNN.
Special Counsel Jack Smith has asked District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan, overseeing the federal election interference case, to place former President Trump under a gag order, limiting how he can publicly comment on the case, filings revealed on Friday show. If approved, the order would ban Trump from making statements “regarding the identity, testimony, or credibility of prospective witnesses” and “statements about any party, witness, attorney, court personnel, or potential jurors that are disparaging and inflammatory, or intimidating.” Trump responded online by accusing Smith’s team of misconduct, posting, “They won’t allow me to SPEAK?” Max Matza and Emma Owen report for BBC News.
