I've only been audited once, and it was my personal income, not a business. My band had played two 4-day gigs at the WPAFB Officer's Club, and we were paid via check. I was the only guy in the band with a checking account (drummer lived in an abandoned trailer by the river, guitarist was an immigrant from Mexico, and bass player an Irishman here on a green card) so the check was written out to me. I cashed it, and I paid the other three guys in cash.
SEVEN years later, I get a letter from the IRS, "Um, you got two checks from the WPAFB OC totaling $1,400, which you didn't claim, and (with interest) you owe us $OMGWTFBBQ!!! dollars!" Cue reactor-strength butt pucker!
Deep breath. I wrote back, and explained everything. The guitarist's name was John Martinez, and I looked up his number in the Dayton phone book, decided not to call the page and a half of them. I didn't even know the bass/drummer's last names, so I was phcked. I admitted to the IRS that I owed taxes on my 1/4 of those checks.
Some time later, I got a letter from the IRS, with a bill for my 1/4th of the taxes; with the interest, it was more than I actually made, but was pretty happy I didn't have to pay for the other three guys. Whew. Sorta.
I paid a lot more attention to how my bands were paid from that point on. Cash is Good. (I'm sure all waitresses/waiters will agree with me on this one).

Pops lived abroad for about 30 yrs, and so his tax matters were a little more complex, as he was paying income tax in two countries, and having to explain to each side what was going on.Corresponded with the IRS regularly, and they almost always ruled in his favor, once he clarified whatever issue they had questions about. Occasionally, he owed them some money, but nothing unreasonable. He’s always maintained that they were always professional, reasonable, and open to hearing what he had to say.I’ve done his US taxes for just shy of 20 yrs, and have to say that I agree with him.If you goofed up, without malintent, I think there’s a good chance you’ll be able to set things straight.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

I am guessing the IRS auditing you when you own and operate a farm might present somewhat differently. In any case, @alaskanassasin I hope it gets cleared up as quickly and as easily as possible for you guys."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

When we lived in NC I had moved several times over the years. I’m bee bopping along one day and the phone rings. Hello this is so and so with the NC department of revenue and I wanted to confirm my appointment at your house tomorrow am for a audit of your payroll. I about shvt. I said first I have heard of it and she said she mailed the notice out weeks ago. It turns they had my old address on file. I ended up sending her to my account (the reason I used one) and we were good.South of Columbus, Ohio.

It's always worth it when you're right, and the irs is wrong, and you pay out of pocket to your accountant and waste your own time. Even better when the book keep steals the payroll taxes and you are on the hook to pay up.........those good guys show up with a gun.....fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I have been self employed for almost my entire adult life, I have always reported everything, always used a bean counter and have had minimal contact with the irs. That all changes when you have employees I was constantly getting letters and sending back letters and getting certified letters and sending back certified letters (I don’t recommend doing that they don’t like it, well about as much as i did I suppose).
I was all in on trump waaaay in the beginning when he was stirring things up and pissing everyone off, way before his election. Then I found out he doesn’t pay taxes and that was enough for me to lose all interest. Not only does it piss me off to no end that these ultra rich can cheat the tax system but he wanted to be president with no skin in the game.
I know for a fact that if the average working joe had to write a check once a year for his or her income tax there would massive changes to government waste.South of Columbus, Ohio. -
I wouldn't say that the vast majority of the ultra-rich cheat the tax system. It's more they're taking advantage of the rules they created and paid their politician minions to put into place.

Not sure if this got posted already. This should not be an event in America that anyone is happy about. There is no excuse for enthusiastically supporting the “right” for undisciplined hothead turd for brains to run around thinking a gun resolves their insecurities— and when they finally think a justifiable moment has occurred to take action they are physically incapable at living out their sharp shooting fantasy that they hurt innocent children.

We had an active shooter situation in Raleigh today. At least five people were killed, including an off-duty police officer. Terrible."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

Add that to the professor are local university who was shot and killed last week by a disgruntled ex-student.
