Let's Take A Poll - Pyrex on the Egg?

Here's My Vote
If you l;ook at the comments from my post about potatoes au gratin, you will see that the new Pyrex baking dish I used exploded when I took @nolaegghead recipe off the Egg and set it on an outdoor table.  There is a ton of info on the web and here in the forum regarding Pyrex and thermal shock, etc. as well as many schools of thought.  I can say that I feel fortunate that I was not blinded by the flying glass and as far a Pyrex goes, I say hell no, especially on the Egg. Maybe I'm gun shy but it's just not worth the chance. FB

Good warning.  I’ve never thought to use it in the egg.

Pyrex doesn’t know the difference between indirect heat in the Egg compared to oven heat. Now sitting a hot glass cooking vessel on a cool table, again, could happen taking from your oven as well. I would sure recommend placing hot glass containers on a wire rack. Or that’s what I’ve been taught. Have seen two pop in the past. One taken from hot oven and placed on a cool convection oven top. And another taken from microwave to lunch table in office kitchen at pot luck.
But I would never use glassware over direct flames or with oven broiler.

I have done this, at semi-low temperatures. One thing pyrex/glass *will* do in my experience, is taking on a very nasty brownish colour if there is smoke. It will not come off easily (my wife was very pleased...).

I learned a lesson about Pyrex around 30 years ago. I had spaghetti sauce in a Pyrex bowl that I need to heat up. Without considering what could go wrong, I heated it up on the electric stove eye. Big mistake- I had a pretty good sized explosion with glass shards and sauce all over the kitchen- a mess of epic proportions.

    Scary mess for sure.
I save the Pyrex for chocolate brownies. That’s about it.

I rarely use my Pyrex, except for storing leftovers in the fridge.  I don't reheat in the Pyrex.  On one hand, it seems like a smart design.  On the other, I fear it is more fragile than it should be.

I have 8 pieces, all brand name Pyrex, and it hardly ever gets used.  I think I baked my au gratin potatoes on Easter in a 9X9 and I probably hadn't used it yet this year.

I would never put it on the Egg.  Only aluminum disposable or cast iron for me.

Years ago swmbo's sister had a pyrex explosion that cracked/shattered the oven door glass.

I also remember LS in this thread:

I took a very cold 12" Lodge out of my deck box a couple of years ago and stuck it on an induction burner on high with boost. Split it right in half. That said, I've got a pizza CI that I've had to 1000* with no issue.

It’s not the high temps that are an issue for these things, it’s the change in temperature.  So going from hot to cold or vice versa quickly is what typically creates the issue.  The large thermal gradients that result give rise to high tensile stresses that brittle materials can’t withstand.

It's actually the glass.  Corning invented a borosilicate glass and Named it pyrex. The stuff today is a soda lime glass. The old stuff worked. Pyrex is just a name.  No longer a type of glass

This.  If it were borosilicate you wouldn’t be having this problem.  At least it wouldn’t be as frequent.

No shortage of borosilicate glass cookware on Amazon, just not Pyrex brand.

I regularly use several Pyrex dishes and casseroles in the Egg without issue, except for some discoloration from the smoke. That said, all of my Pyrex is very old, and their newer products may differ.

Is there a way to tell if it truly is borosilicate, other than making au gratins on my egg?

I wouldn't trust the average Amazon listing as far as I could throw the cookware.

I had pyrex implode on the egg. I had it wrapped in foil because that's easier than cleaning it after a smoke.  It was easy to throw out.  Still ate the potatoes as there was no cross contamination with broken glass and food.

SWMBO turned the wrong burner on in the kitchen where an empty pyrex was sitting.  When it exploded thankfully no one was in the kitchen.

  • I also destroyed a Pyrex cooking dish by taking it our of the XLBGE and placing it immediately on a cold stone ledge.  It shattered right away.

Thermal shock is real, so is brain fart, I almost ruined this romatopf in a preheated instead of cold oven  :)

I've got a ton of the stuff in all different shapes and sizes.  I don't use it on the egg for fear of discoloration or worse.  Instead, I deploy the various pieces for specific/dedicated tasks -- for instance, my medium pyrex bowl produces the best 3 cheese blend I've ever tasted (although every time I do it, I need to search the webz for the recipe, which is a total pita).
