I don't know if there's a regularly published stat like "GDP per capita". Since the US's population is 1/4th that of China's, that might be an interesting number to see.JohnInCarolina said:

But to your original point, it's unclear to me that the metric referenced in that article - GDP in terms of purchasing power - is more "accurate" than simply the GDP. It's simply another way to view the information. Much like GDP per capita. And I wasn't defending one vs the other, just referencing how I think most people would think about one economy vs another."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

Nominal GDP has it’s place, but when you are comparing to a country that manipulates it’s exchange rate to USD, like China, it gives a false result. PPP compares apples to apples in that case. “GDP” and “Economy” seem to be very flexible terms, with a lot of different ways to view them.JohnInCarolina said:

I hope General Milley has been on the phone with his Russian counterpart to get a better assessment of just what this means. Any saber rattling using the nuke card is taking the posturing to a whole new level.
I have read and watched several different news sources this AM. The war is not going anywhere near what Putin expected and he tightened the Western alliance as opposed to driving a wedge. So, he is getting himself boxed-in. Yes the sanctions will hurt and hit at the everyday citizens. But to go to this position to boost his domestic standing will require explanation beyond what the Russian state media can spin.
Would that Putin can still be a rational actor.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint. -
Saw an interview with a Russian watcher/psychologist yesterday, and there was another one this morning on CBS. The last two years Putin has changed, a lot. He was deathly afraid of COVID and had isolated himself to an extreme (I'm still surprised he flew to China), and the psychologist said his rambling rant a few days ago on TV was alarming to him. I'm very worried."First method of estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him."

Me too, he seems unhinged. Hopefully, cooler heads will prevail. The Russian military can't like the mess they've ended up in because of Putin's dream of a Greater Russia.Botch said:Saw an interview with a Russian watcher/psychologist yesterday, and there was another one this morning on CBS. It just strikes me as a bit too convenient to Putin and his propaganda of Ukraine being filled with Nazis, when he is trying to get the Chechans to help him out as well."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

Putin has a history of running false flag campaigns. In the case of Ukraine, they actually do have a nazi problem, but it's blown way out of proportion. The president is Jewish with family that died by the nazi "cleansing". The right wing nazi/nationalist problem is a disease that has been growing in many developed nations who paradoxically suffered from them in WWII. Take the GOP, for example. When it comes down to the nationalists, nazis and other right-wingers in Ukraine, vs Russia, it's all hands on deck and as the old proverb goes, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend".______________________________________________I love lamp..

Lots of what ifs in there. If Russia has nukes, why does it need a buffer state at all? This seems more like Vlad's war than Russia's war.Kayak said:Another perspective. Certainly worth considering, but I'm sure it won't be.

I have a really hard time taking these kinds of arguments, which seem to still be centered on the notion that this was mostly about NATO, all that seriously. There's a strong "if she didn't want her husband to beat her, she shouldn't have made him angry" vibe to it all. It's gross.Eoin said:

Just bizarre to me to place so much emphasis on what Putin has said, when he has clearly lied about so much. But even then, if you believe what he says, then you can't ignore that he's said Ukraine shouldn't exist.
