Trying to do the car packing and prep. Of course it is raining like all of 2021(no garage). So much for washing the car before I leave. The dog is going to go nuts thinking he is going to granddaddy’s house. Oh well it is a good boarding facility.

As for Katy, there is a Rudy's bbq there (Texas based chain that's spreading out a bit more).    They have electric recharging stations for your vehicle.

Currently charging in Hammond LA. A bit of a late start due to a gully washer.

if you do end up stopping/staying in Midland hit up Cork and Pig.   It's not bbq but more of a casual, yet higher end restaurant.    I spend a week per month up in those parts and it's a must hit for me.   Was just there last week.

I live here in Midland.  Yeah, Cork and Pig is pretty solid.  BBQ wise, if you make it mid day, try the Feed Lot/Half Acre BBQ.  It is pretty legit.

Various flyover countries will be ramping up the charger installations soon as many new electric trucks are coming out.  They will be marketed as functionally better (more powerful mainly) and less emphasis on environmental benefits because the environmental stuff doesn't resonate with the rednecks who think it's some kind of hoax.

According to the app, Midland has an ElectrifyAmerica charging station. That means free for the first 3 years. A Texan in a Chevrolet Bolt asked me all sorts of VW questions while we were both charging in Breaux Bridge. I didn’t tell him that my cost was nada and his wasn’t.

Nice part of Texas there. Just south of there is Garner state park, on the Frio river, where George Strait learned to swim. (All my exes live in Texas).

3.5 hours west of you and about 15 minutes off of I-10 is Balmorhea State Park.

It's an interesting place that is worth a stop - especially if you brought your swimsuit.  It's an old Army Corps of Engineers project where they dammed up a clear creek and made (at the time) the world's largest outdoor swimming pool.  It's huge, about 25 feet deep with large catfish hanging out on the bottom, and a 1M and 3M diving boards.  There are some cabins and campsites that are good places to stop - although I know you're planning on getting a little farther down the road today.  The food in town is nothing special.

In Lubbock tonight. Not EV friendly . The only place to charge is at the Harley Davidson dealer. Very slow charger. At Joe’s Crab Shack
  • Be careful in Lubbock.  My understanding is that it’s filled with drunks.

One thing I am curious about is how you’re liking the car these days?  You pretty happy with it?  For me long road trips are when you really find out how good a car is.

Yes I do. The infotainment software could use some tweaking which is supposed to happen. But it rides well. By selecting the next charging points and telling the nav system to take the shortest route I am traveling over some interesting secondary roads. It’s ability to tell the legal speed limit helps as well as adaptive cruise control. Siri fills in like when a lens fell out of my glasses “Hey Siri, navigate to the nearest optician”, worked like a charm.

Oh man, Lubbock has some great Mexican restaurants, not chains, that could have been had, Montelongo's, Chimy and Rosa's, then there's the famous Spanky's.   Oh well, maybe next time...
