Glad to hear that you are doing well brother Tex. I wish you good luck on your endeavor.
On a separate note, I had to google “Airbnb”. I have never heard of that. I guess I need to get out more often 🤣

Thanks Scottie. airbnb is kind of a name brand for a vacation rental (like calling a tissue a "Kleenex"). It's just vacation rentals using the Airbnb platform to vet guests and facilitate all the $ transactions.

Buddy of mine sold his house in Dripping Springs.  The guy who bought it, Jackie Sherrill,  got spotted on my friend's surveillance camera taking a leak on the property when he was looking at it.  Keeping it weird.

Not sure people on a romantic getaway weekend in wine country want to be awoken by cannon fire at 6:30 am and watch a guy in camo drag a bloody 10-pointer out of the woods while they have coffee on the deck
You could sell it as "Romantic Wine-ison Getaways"... good wine upfront, damn fresh venison later.

Congrats to you and Janell with your new adventure! It sounds wonderful, and I know y'all will do it up "right". We decided to leave the lake life and move to Brenham, where family and friends live. We were able to ride the coat tails of the ATX housing boom, an hour and a half away. Eleven offers on the house the first day, all above asking price. Sold for 16% over asking. Glad y'all get to take advantage of the situation, too. It's great to know y'all are doing well. Thanks for checking in!

oh wow! I didn't know you guys left the lake. Prices out there are going crazy too. Glad you guys were able to sock a little away. These crazy runs don't come often and I've been on the other side of one in 2008 so the house gods owe me one :)

A plug for Fredricksburg and @The Cen-Tex Smoker and TFJ's soon to be grand adventure.  Fredricksburg- my first and only tour of a HEB store.  Even better than the pics-the brisket section (yes, with wagyu) was incredible, reenforcing the "better to be lucky than good" slogan.
Should you make the trip then allow a few hours to visit the National Museum of the Pacific War (the driver for my visit there-brisket was the main focus for the main trip).  Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz's home town.  You will totally enjoy.

As a side note, the German heritage is everywhere and fully supported by the available beers.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

Can’t beat the peaches from Fredricksburg. You looking to get into the fruit wine business?

We are not but we are looking to lease the front 10 acres to a winery for a vineyard. There is an existing deer hunting operation there now which I'm not sure we are going to keep going. We will see how it does this fall and then make a call. The guy spent a ton of money on genetics and infrastructure on the land (it's all high-fenced and there are several rotating crops he puts in every year for the deer) so it is something we are going to consider. We are building out 6 airbnb properties on it too so we will have to figure out a way to balance those 2 things when the time come. Not sure people on a romantic getaway weekend in wine country want to be awoken by cannon fire at 6:30 am and watch a guy in camo drag a bloody 10-pointer out of the woods while they have coffee on the deck
Sounds legit to me! Just saying,
I drink cheap beer so I can afford good bourbon.

Rhone varietals grow best in TX (hot summers, rocky soil). (Reds) Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Tempranillo, (whites) Marsanne, Viongier, Rousanne

there are a few others but these tend to grow best in our climate

@The Cen-Tex Smoker I'm a fan of the Tempranillos that grow around Fredericksburg.
    Coleman, Texas
Large BGE & Mini Max for the wok. A few old camp Dutch ovens and a wood fired oven. LSG 24” cabinet offset smoker. There are a few paella pans and a Patagonia cross in the barn. A curing chamber for bacterial transformation of meats...

Me too. The GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) blends are very good too.

Great, thanks for asking. I was off the oxycodone after 7 days. Now walking pain free if I use a cane.  Hardest part is getting in my 4Runner.

@JethroVA- one of these would be useful to get in and out of your 4Runner while you recuperate.  Use it now and save it for when you are much older, later.

It’s my impression that a relatively small percentage (? 10-20%) of the wine served/sold in the tasting rooms around Fredericksburg is grown near there - although the vast majority is grown in Texas.  A lot of the vines are in the drier climate near the New Mexico border - especially the Tempranillo. They make most of the wine in the Fredericksburg area.

We also learned yesterday that there are some remarkable bottles of Petit Verdot being served/sold in the area.  Apparently it grows better in Texas than in France.

@Foghorn Good point - I certainly don’t know the percentage. To your point, we have two small wineries here in Coleman. I know one of them has won some accolades for their Syrah. I have no idea if that’s a function of soil and climate, their skill as vintners, or personal preference on their part and good luck. I’m no authority, but it’s an interesting topic.

Fredericksburg was a great time, and I was impressed with the quality and style. We will definitely return some day.

I now have another reason to do so. Congrats on the move and I am hoping it all goes well. I totally understand how fast life goes by, when you are working your backside off, kinda been doing that myself, along with some health issues as well.

these pics are from our last trip. So much fun.

True. They grow 70-80% of the wine made in Fredericksburg in the high plains area (up in the panhandle by Lubbock and Amarillo). Most of the vineyards in Fredericksburg are small and I think a lot of them are for show. The vineyards out west can be massive
