    @alaskanassasin

I put turkeys in with the chickens. It took me a little too long to realize that the roosting turkeys were jumping off of their roosts onto the chickens. Each time they landed they pretty much killed one or two chickens. I thought I was fighting a disease. Needless to say I ended up with about 70 chickens.

Just got off the phone with the Mennonite butchers, scheduled for first week in October
I had about 100 to butcher - I think about 70 made it to the end.  I called an Amish butcher that would have been a 3 hour round trip for me.  I asked him "So if I drop them off at 11AM, when can I pick them back up?"  He was confused.  After a few clarifying questions, I realized his crew would have them ready inside of an hour.  No return trip would have been necessary.  I almost did it for the spectacle of them processing the birds that quickly.
The last time I witnessed a chicken slaughter, the same thing happened.  We were asked to wait while a group of the scariest looking dudes you have ever seen grabbed chickens as fast as they could and stuffed them in upside-down traffic cones that were screwed to a wooden fence at about shoulder height.  Then "Larry", the kill-man, came along and decapitated them as soon as they stuck their head out of the cone to get some daylight.  It was like the horror movie version of whack-a-mole!

He grinned the entire time.  The man truly loved his job.

The massacre took only minutes.  I can still see the feathers.  They were literally everywhere.

My buddy and I were pretty silent on the ride home, choosing not to talk about what we had just seen.
I had a boss years ago that had grown up on a farm.  He wouldn’t eat chicken.  When he was a kid, one of his jobs was to tie the chickens by the feet to a clothes line (hanging upside down) and then with the long blade hedge trimmers come along and cut the heads.
One of my closest friends refuses to eat lobster because he grew up baiting traps on his father’s lobster boat.
A guy I used to work with would not eat ketchup. He dad was a tomato farmer, growing up he would ride in his old man’s pickup truck for delivery to the local Heinz, seen his fair share of four legged creatures amongst the matos!

I have been raising chickens and processing them myself for over 30 years. It’s not that hard to do, 2 of us can get 50 birds done in an hour. A far better product than store bought and good return on investment. I rarely lose any birds, the biggest problem I had was the hot temps in the summer. I get my birds in mid August now and kill them at around 7 weeks. They are usually in the 5 lb range by then.

For sure. Get set up and go for it. You can raise a crop of chickens faster than a tomato plant!  I have a plucker - saves a lot of time. 30 seconds and plucked perfectly

I had no idea there was such a thing. Thank you YouTube. That looks super slick.

@GlennM , so what kind of a pile of feathers do you end up with?  I do remember my Grandma Botch chopping chickens' heads off when I was a kid, but I don't remember how she plucked them.

We had the one from tractor supply. We returned it after using it. Not as advertised. I think we were possibly the first one to return a chicken plucker.

The one in the video is the one we have. It’s all stainless but he hasn’t pulled the shipping plastic off it yet. And yes, water temp is crucial

@ColbyLang check Amazon (guess that was rhetorical).

I grabbed multiple Samsonite pieces for what I perceived to be a good deal.   Albeit this was a couple years ago and over the span of a few weeks.

For the price, I’m looking at (buying) the Rolling Thunder line from the North Face. I’ve got member points that bring the pricing down a little. Gonna examine and return if I don’t like what we see.

@GrateEggspectations talents that are beyond worthy right there.  Couple that with your wife's musical skills and the union is obvious.  Congrats to you both.

That’s much too kind. We met studying music just about twenty years ago, but I’m just a poser whereas she’s a real professional.  Something about being lucky but no good fits here.
