I get the importance of tackling knife crime, but I don’t get why discussions touching upon the irrefutably low rates of gun violence in the U.K. (a result of effective gun policies) keep resulting in a focus on a meager (and seemingly un noteworthy, relative to the U.S.) number of knife deaths across several threads in this forum.

It may be surprising to some, but I just spent a good chunk of time in the U.K. and didn’t get stabbed even once.
My friends dad was murdered two months ago with a butcher knife. I got to clean up his Dads apartment with his son a few days later where a chunk of carpet was missing where he died in his own blood. Stabbings happen here in the US.
Sorry to hear about your friend's dad, and the rug.  I bet it really tied the room together, man.

I missed that assertion in any of the posts in this thread.  thanks for clarifying.

It's illegal in most states for people to carry in a concealed fashion,  butterfly knives, switchblades or knives with blades over 4 inches in length.
Yet the National Machete Association remains silent instead of fighting for our rights.  Where is the hew and cry for the rights of knife owners?

They certainly don't.  They just tend to kill a lot more people with them, much more quickly.  Google how many mass stabbings there have been, and how many folks end up getting killed in them compared to your typical mass shooting.

  • @WeberWho: Sad story. Never said that stabbings don’t happen. Just that diverting a discussion about the U.S.’ gun issue to relatively insignificant statistics about stabbings seems like a red herring.

Gun nuts really wanna believe that if guns were banned in the US, the same people would still get killed, just with knives.  It's not an argument that would survive a high school debate class, but it's one you'll hear time and again because they've all been brainwashed by gun rights propaganda.

I completely understand what you're saying. A sad story indeed. More or less stating that some random person on a bbq forum knows someone who was murdered with a knife within the last few months.

My cousin was mugged with a butcher knife. I've had a butcher knife pulled on me after being concealed behind his jacket at a bar. I wouldn't take any of his or his homies sh!t

My intent was to say it does happen and unfortunately has some tragic outcomes at times.

Comparing the U.S. with anywhere (U.K., Australia, etc.) is fallacious. Those countries weren't founded with the idea that citizenry should be able to protect itself from a tyrannical government.
    Wasn’t Australia founded by... convicts?

I asked this question before. What do we do? Through all of this "debate" I've heard one suggestion. No wonder they can't agree on anything or get anything done in Washington. We have created a massive problem. There is no way to recover all of the guns. Stroll over to Google and do a search for gun sales since WW2. Very few of those guns have worn out or been destroyed. No way if guns are outlawed you get a fraction back. There needs to be another way. @Battleborn makes great points

Did you have professors at GaTech who just handed you the answers to the questions you were asking?  Because I have to tell you, those are not the good professors.

Ok, just dodge the obvious, very suave.

Obviously a convict penal colony that became a country did NOT in fact form a new country to protect itself from a tyrannical government

Isn’t that Chris Rock’s idea?  Like make bullets $1000 each?   I have to admit that it has some merit.
