@lousubcap wait for it.  They all get an automatic bid..  Seriously.  They're expanding the field to 16 group of three or 48 bids.
Spoiler alert.... Do not read beyond this point for year 2026...

Soccer/Football is a fascinating game, assuming you’re pre-frontal cortex exists. It is the Beautiful game. Watch out for Brazil. I’d take them over Germany and Spain. Those 3 and France, a winner comes from those.

@The_Stache  and @thetrim - I have not heard of that deal but do know of the field expansion.  I will be quite challenged to be around in eight years for that one but who knows!!
Knockout round this year takes July 4th off...Some scheduler planned ahead and then the US tubed it.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

Yep, first 3 groups ended up pretty much as expected. Nigeria to kick off the group stage upsets, Argies the first big team on the plane home. Hopefully.

Would be cool to see two African Nations go on.  Nigeria and Senegal.  Argentina is handling them well the first half.

Why are the games between the strongest teams last?  France v Denmark - what was the point of that?  England v Belgium could be come one team trying to score own goals & the other trying for bookings to get the so-called 'softer' route forward.  Better to schedule them as match #2.  I assume the big teams prefer it to open up the chance of resting players.

Just the luck of the draw.  In Germany's group, they played Mexico first and Korea last.  I hate to admit it but I watched the draw happen.  It was interesting to watch.  The teams got drawn into their group then placed in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th position within the group.  They had all schedules, times, locations, etc set and just had to fill in the blank.  Only the host country, Russia, was in a guaranteed spot A1.

The group stage has the intended result of giving the smaller teams 3 games at the finals and giving the big teams a couple of chances to get it right at the start of the event so they don't get knocked out by a freak result.  A straight knockout with random unseeded draw would make things more interesting and remove some of the bloat from the tournament, especially with the planned expansion in the number of teams at the finals.

Wow.  Germany going home.  Finished last in their group.  Just wow.

Leroy Sane is looking like a good choice now...

Simultaneous matches with something on the line is such an exhilarating event.  First time in 80 years that Germany fails to get out of the group stages at the WC.  First time in 40 that they won't make the quarters.

Brazil in 2006 is the only defending champ to get out of the group stages in the last 20 years.

I'm a little confused by Lineker's comment (although I do think he was right about Maradona).  Since he was born Germany have won 3 of 14 World Cups.  How is that "always"?

Germany didn’t deserve it and didn’t seem to want it. Leroy Sane would’ve helped but wouldn’t be enough
I’m certainly disappointed but not heartbroken.  If those on the field don’t seem to give a ____ why should I let this get me down.
Shouldve the with about six different players and that maybe done the trick.  Either way, I’m pulling for Senegal now.

I'll cheer for them, too.  But I don't really expect them to make the final 8.

    Possibly a bit premature - but may not get time on the weekend, so here's the latest winner odds;

    Brazil @ 7/2 are shortening favourites  (+350)
    Spain @ 4/1  (+400)
    Belgium @ 11/2 (+550)
    England @ 15/2  (+750)
    France @ 8/1  (+800)
    Croatia @ 10/1 (+1000)
Argentina @ 14/1 (1400)    -  probably worth a flutter,  despite them being despicable wretches and the inevitable moral conflict that will stir.

Strangely, no odds showing for Germany.  Oh no - hang on....  =)=)=)=)

After the first half against Sweden the commentators here all said that there was something wrong in the team, that they didn't weem to want it or be pulling together.  As we expect them to do, they pulled it out of the bag in the second half and normal service was resumed.  Apparently, that was a brief spike and not a return to form.  All glad here to see the German machine self destruct.

Thanks.  I was suspicious that was the case.  I guess it is an unusual situation to know that England have at least 2 more games while Germany is done.

It is. In The Times today one pundit was sorry they are out because they are so poor and we have missed out on a rare chance to beat them. I'll take the early knockout myself.
