  • Setting the whole lunch, dinner, tea thing straight:

If you live in the South of England, at approx 1pm you eat lunch and at 7pm you have your dinner. You may also have afternoon tea around 4pm if you're posh (consisting of sandwiches and cake). And you may have supper, the last meal of the day, at 9pm. Supper is a light meal, unless it's a 'fish supper' which means fish and chips and is a motherload of food, eaten at any time of day.

In the north of England you'll eat your dinner at lunch time, and you'll never have afternoon tea because that's a posh southern thing, but you will have your tea at the same time a southerner has their dinner. Supper is probably some tea (a cup of tea - not tea tea, because you already had your tea at lunch time) probably with a biscuit.

Breakfast is always at breakfast time whether you're in the north or south, but you may also have Elevenses at 11am which will be a cup of tea and a light sandwich, a lot like afternoon tea, tea or supper.

    Hope that clears things up.

Yes. Biscuits are not sweet. Interesting you say they are round. Most scone recipes I see instruct to form the dough into a big round then cut into pie wedges. My SIL is from France and that's how she does them.

Actually, there's more to it than just that. I remember hearing about this on NPR some time ago, but the gist of it is that singing tends to neutralize accents. In English at least.

You should try rock cakes, they will blow your mind.

On reading that back I see two potential drug references, both completely unintentional.    Rock cakes are the evil cousin of fruit scones and an absolute treat.  With a cup of tea, obviously.

Yep - irresistible, even to the African Grey parrot that was the star attraction in my local pet shop (as in store).    Best enjoyed with a cup of tea, obviously.

As to World peace, the content might prove a tad divisive...

Nonetheless, when you all plan your next trip to Blighty ensure you allow plenty of time to visit the place called Greggs (at least one in every town).

Those guys were hilarious.  I think I still have one of thier albums in the attic somewhere.  Was introduced to them when my family lived in Oxfordshire for four years in the 70's.  My buddies and I had to treat those albums as contraband and hide them from our parents.

@SciAggie give these a try, BBC calls them Welsh Cakes but these are actually called bakestones in Wales. We always had these when we visited my Welsh gran or great aunt.

  • Are pork scratchings available in the US?

When I was a student, I was in a pub with another student who was fresh over from South Africa. He tried some of my pork scratchings, declared how delicious they were, then asked what they were made from.
"Pig skin and fat" I said
He laughed. "No seriously. What are they made from?"

He couldn't believe we'd eat pig skin and fat. Despite coming from a country that dry cures any meat

@pgprescott is this a general view in the US?

Welfare is a big issue here. Our system is not particularly generous by European standards, but still leaves us with a situation where some people are better off (or at least no worse off) on benefits than if they are in work. Benefits here also trigger other free stuff not available to those in work, making the step from benefits to work a big one.

Not that life on benefits is easy, but some people accept being poor on benefits with no hope for the future rather than being poor in work with some prospect of betterment. There is a mentality of 'why should I work for no extra money' rather than benefits being a last resort option.

Ah yes, Great Britain : proudly repelling invasions since 1066 (except the Glorious Revolution led by King Billy).

King Edward I of England did kill William Wallace who was Scottish (not scotch).  And I think that tells you everything you need to know.

I think you sum it up pretty well. The only other factor is the ability of the government to control the masses once they are dependent upon them for benefits. Certainly there are a good number of people who need numerous benefits, but there is a huge and growing amount of folks who are more than able bodied and have adopted the attitude you described above. We have made this path easier for them as opposed to providing incentives to work.

As far as my view being prevailing, I would say 50-50. This is one of the basic rifts between the left and the right. To me it’s not merely an issue of cost, rather dignity and liberty. I would rather pay a bit more even to see more people helped out of dependency and into independence.  This of course requires quite a bit of grit in the part of the dependency group. It would not be easy.
