  • My wifes daughter lives near the Galleria in Houston but works in Laporte.  Her awesome boss made them work at least half a day.  I am trying to talk her into leaving now and try to get to Austin where her sisters live.

Yesterday, I was hoping we'd get some rain out of it.  Today, phone has been blowing up all day with alerts...and I'm inland in Austin.  Flash flood alerts...expire on Monday and looks like we could get some wind as well.  If it hits Corpus, everything east of there is going to be underwater, lots of low land with high water table all the way past Houston.  That's going to be f'd up.

I've got a friend that works at Vandergrift.... is that in your area?

Not a problem. Is she on the road yet? She should get started if she's planning on going. Things are expected to really pick up later in the day.

Vandegrift is NW Austin, I'm in SW Austin, but both are west of I-35 which for some reason can be both a magnet for and a dividing line for the really heavy rain.  Not always, but for this storm they are again using I-35 in Austin as the divider.

My friend is the Head Athletic Trainer at the school.  He's a GA boy, but absolutely loves it there in Texas!  I keep telling him that he's gotta get a smoker of some kind when he finally decided where he's gonna live.  I understand that housing is a bit more expensive there than it is down in Griffin, GA where he came from!

    Stay safe!

Sorry about the duplicate quotes, outer was acting up. Anyhow apples, oranges and bananas are good hurricane food along with canned nuts. They can usually be found also.

I have family all over Texas.  Mostly San Antonio.

I just hope people don't make poor decisions.  Chances are, you are not prepared to stay.  You might think you are.  Even if you don't flood, can you handle 5-10 days with no power?  Oh, you have a generator.  Do you have 200 gallons of fuel to keep it going?  There won't be any gas stations open.  No way to get out after it hits.   I'm sure anyone on this forum has enough food to last, no worries there.

Neighbors that seemed like perfectly normal people will turn into apocalyptic freaks, driven to the brink with fear.  Scared people are dangerous people.  I learned this from experience.  We're in an upper middle class neighborhood and we saw the creation of some monsters.

It's almost like those bad B movies where, if everyone stays cool, everything will be cool.  But there's always that one freak that ruins it for everyone.

Anyway, good luck y'all.  I'm rooting for ya.  Be smart.

On the other hand across the state line in Mississippi we often found out just how good people can be. Food was shared along with tools and labor as we swept out houses, did the '4 foot gut' on the sheetrock, wove shingles in and got used to the "new normal". I'm sure that happened some places in New Orleans also. Much praise goes to volunteers from out of state. But don't take anything from the federal government that you don't have to. Years later they will want documentation on exactly what you spent the money on including invoices and receipts, if you don't have it they have a nice jail cell for you. Also get any promises from the government and your insurance agent in writing.

My experience with Hurricanes is it is helpful to be of clear mind. The wine should be consumed when it has passed and all are safe. Celebrate successful survival. Stuff is replaceable....people are not.

I hear ya @nolaegghead. Someone at work was rammed with a shopping cart Wed because some pinhead thought she was going for the last case of water .

We won't get hit as bad as further SW. The city will flood pretty bad, but our burb is usually ok. Lake sort of thing in the back should keep us from flooding. I think we can go about a week without power if it really gets to that. We have a reasonable supply of nonperishable food to keep us going, and water. We'll bug out if necessary , but I doubt it will come to that.

    But people do get crazy.

  • We just had our first outer band hit us. Raining like a mother. The eye of the storm is 240 nautical miles from here and still 80 miles off shore. This is going to be a monster. We never get outer bands this far north.
