APL's United Kingdom Baked Beans

We have made these a number of times for various parties, including one yesterday.  Here's the recipe:

http://www.tastebook.com/blog/recipes/3254408-UKBB-United-Kingdom-Baked-Beans-/?redirect=true

The recipe is not in Serious BBQ, otherwise I bet more of you would have tried these.  It's in one of his other books - Charred and Scruffed, which I can also recommend.

Like just about every APL recipe, they're both a little involved and also worth it in the end.  You'll note that they include bacon, and everything tastes better with bacon!  The recipe calls for them to be cooked in the oven, but I've done them on the Egg and they're incredible.  They pick up just a little bit of smoke and it's a nice accent.

The flavor profile is different from your standard baked beans.  There's a sweet-and-tangy side to these that really sets them off.  And did I mention the bacon?  My mouth is drooling just thinking about them.  These are always a real hit with guests, both because they're very good and they taste very different than standard baked beans.

We get through plenty of Heinz baked beans in this house, going to try this recipe on the Egg.

I bet they would be even better cooked in a Serbian clay pot over an open wood fire alongside a pond in the middle of a national park. :)

We love this recipe - glad you thought about sharing it. Definitely worth the effort.

I've tried this recipe but, put a few twists to it. The recipe sans changes is a savory delight especially in the egg. Using CI DO and infusing some smoke is key imho.

Yep, agree with the smoke. SWMBO did that by using smokey bourbon, was spectacularly good. Her recipe looks similar to the one in the OP (also used bacon), we'll try that one and compare.

    Her recipe is this:

@Eoin - I thought Heinz when I saw the title. We haven't had those since making our own except for once, when we ran out of the homemade stuff. Our old staple tasted synthetic in comparison. Making your own beans is so worthwhile.

Thank you for posting this link. I will make these this weekend, our Son's graduation party. I will smoke with just a little bit of sugar maple, too.
