International Holocaust Remembrance Day
"International Holocaust Remembrance Day, is an international memorial day on 27 January commemorating the victims of the Holocaust. It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jewish people, 2 million Romani people, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, and 9,000 homosexual men by the Nazi regime and its collaborators."
Fortunately, there is NO chance of anything like that happening now. Here. In our United States. No way.
Right?

You disgrace yourself. Good grief. Get some help.

As someone who has been to many Holocaust sites in Europe (Dachau, Anne Frank, Oskar Schindler in Poland etc.), making cracks about this isn't cool even by your standards.
-
I don't think that the OP was "making cracks" about the Holocaust. The statement above references the awful human costs of the world's greatest tragedy and I don't see anything in the post contradicting or making light of this.
Rather, I believe he(?) is making the widely-accepted assertion that nationalism was a driving force of the rise of Nazism and (perhaps sarcastically) making the argument that similar risks exist for any nation that exhibits strong nationalistic traits. -
Comparing Trump to a monster that systematically rounded up and murdered thousands of people is an awful parallel/accusation to make. The guy is an idiot, that is a concession I will readily provide, but to even hint this sort of genocide will happen today is lunacy, at best.
Get a grip folks. Carry an umbrella, if you think the sky is falling. Good luck.

Seems like climate deniers aren't the only alternate fact folks here. We have anti-semites too, based on the negative flags. What a shame.

OK, I usually try to stay out of these discussions but here goes:
As a Jew, I am very offended with Hitler analogies that are thrown around like water. An example is calling George W a Fascist or Hitler. That is not only wrong but is disgusting and denigrates the Holocaust, along with obviously not knowing who Hitler was. George W, or Trump, have never called for the cancellation of elections, or the mass deportations to camps of American citizens due to their race/faith. Now if he goes through with a Muslim registry there may be some parallels there. But we are not Weimar Germany.
I think Trump definitely has authoritarian tendencies, and his attempt to muzzle the media do harken back to Fascist regimes. However, the one disturbing parallel I see is the denial of refugees from Muslim countries to emigrate here. The parallel with the Holocaust is the U.S. did exactly this-case in point is the St Louis, a ship carrying Jewish refugees from Nazi Europe to the U.S. They were denied entry-due to fear they were German spies and yes probably some anti-Semitism-with many ending up dying in Nazi camps. This was not the only ship, just an example. In my opinion this was a very shameful part of our nation's history that we should never repeat.
That is the lesson we need to remember and learn from-not to turn our backs on people fleeing persecution and death. They are running from our enemies-they are not our enemies.
I am not interested in debating this, just wanted to put that out there. Please think about this-we lost many family members, my husband especially. We do not want others to suffer a similar fate.

Let's remember it did happen here. Asian americans were rounded up in the early 40's and shipped off to "interment" camps. Their property confiscated never to be returned to them. Just because we live in the greatest country in the world, with a strong written constitution doesn't mean it can't happen here. Germany, in the early 30's was a western style democracy with christian moral values. Granted, the environment that lent rise to Nazisim does not exist at present in the US. However, no one can say it won't, you can. We must remain vigilant.D'you think I could interest you in a pair of zircon-encrusted tweezers?

Obviously, you and several others disagree. I can not change the lens through which you/others view things, though I certainly understand how previous posts have crafted the lens through which my posts are viewed.
Regarding that, anyway, I am unapologetic.
I will, however, give a nod toward your second stanza. I should take care to avoid becoming overly entrenched in my mindset and am unsure when I am or when I am not allowing myself to become inflexible.
I doubt that I am alone in that.

Jewish groups pan Trump for signing refugee ban on Holocaust Remembrance Day
"Many organizations that advocate for refugees slammed President Donald Trump's executive action Friday imposing "extreme vetting" on those fleeing to America, among them Jewish groups that took particular exception to the day on which he signed it: Holocaust Remembrance Day.
"It's repulsive," said Mark Hetfield, president and CEO of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to resettling refugees in the United States. "I mean, the timing is incredibly offensive. . . . " "
Yes, it was.

good thing the Saudi haven't been successful exporting Wahhabism? Plus pretty sure the refugee flood isn't coming from Saudi, UAE, etc.
but your point is valid- not sure why we continue to put up with the house of Saud and the backstabbing we get from the royal family.Greensboro, NC -

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a new executive order requiring all Muslims already in the US to wear red arm bands with the crescent moon embossed on them.
edit: arm bands must be made in USA.
