Let's just say I'm knocking on the 1%'s door. We take zero deductions during the year so our take refund is pure "play money" since we budget and save without it in the equation.
As you know, my FIL is a CPA.  He talked us into moving away from that strategy.  We did the same in our 20's, but now, he rides us as close to the red without going over. Paychecks are fatter and we accrue interest, not Uncle Sam.
This is absolutely the right thing to do.

@cazzy, Granted, you are in a special situation since you have an accountant as family, but how much interest to you actually get on the additional money and would it offset the cost of a CPA for someone without the family discount?

We had a terrible experience with the one time we used a CPA, so we've basically sworn them off. I can do our taxes just fine and have a financial planner.

Brother, Uncle Sam really got in my pocket deep this year. I almost hate to use this term, but I was truly "devastated" when I found out what I owed.
if you would like we could trade incomes and debt. somehow i claimed 7 all year, filed single, and they gave me money =) the plus side of low income high debt ;)

The rub is ok; it's just when it's coupled with the tug that it becomes problematic.

Congrats on the special delivery!  Commander in Chief is probably following this forum closely, especially the devastated thread, and thought why not send Scotty boy some good stuff.  You know, since you paid your share in taxes and voted for him.

Maybe, maybe not.  It all depends on how much you put into your short-term or long-term savings and how you're saving. I'm no finiancial expert, so I won't pretend to have all the answers.  That is just what we do based on his advice.  Ultimately, you control your money and not the IRS.  10K+ is a lot of coin to not be in your (or your financial planners) control.

He basically estimates what we'll pay in taxes at that end of the year, then tells us how to fill out our W4 based off his estimate.  I can only recall us owing once, but it was only a couple hundo.

Either way, it's like you said, whatever floats your boat.

@SGH, he got us too.  My wife said it was our rental property that did it now that we are not taking as much of a loss on it now.  I told her when the renters move out I am sealing it.  We probably aren't as bad as you, it just killed our bank account until we get the state returns back.

Congrats on getting the gifts my friend.  You do deserve them.

That's really puzzling then. Nonetheless, the rub is outstanding.

tug or no tug, if he's rubbed himself then this is probably not illegal, even in Mississippi.

Thomas Rib Shack and Southern Flavor Seasoning are both from Alabama, probably not distributed widely.

There's a guy on SmokerBuilder.com named smokendink71in Illinois that makes rubs and sells them, one is named 'udder madness.'  He also seems to be on a lot of BBQ forums selling his rubs.

anonymous package to SGH to generate mystery, great way to generate some interest.

my favorite of all is Scottie is explaining the Houston postmark could be from Austin by comparing to Saucier and Gulfport

    Brilliant.

I can just imagine my wife's reaction after spending years raising our kids to be careful with things like the internet and I get an anonymous package with some homemade rub in a ziploc baggy that's probably from someone I know from an internet forum.  That would be a fun discussion.

I have considered this as well^^^^^^^^.
However my first hunch was it was someone from this forum. Folks on the BGE forum seem more open to this kind of gesture. No disrespect meant at all toward the Brethern, but it's a totally differnt type of atmosphere versus here.

What's brilliant about it^^^^^^^. It's absolute fact. Nothing I send from either of my homes will be post marked from the local post offices. It will ship to the major hub in Gulfport and from there be sent out. I have no idea if Austin is big enough or do they use Houston as their major hub. I merely made the comparison trying to narrow down where the package came from.

Hey, not trying to piss you off.  Houston's three hours from Austin and Austin is closing in on 900k people just in the city limits.  The comparison of two relatively small cities with Austin and Houston struck me as funny.

You did not. Not in the least. I just had a thought that the Austin-Houston postmark may be akin to our Saucier-Gulfport stamp. I didn't realize that Austin was quite that far from Houston. With that said, my theory may have fell apart. I'm on my Cymbalta, even Cazzy couldn't make me mad!! No harm, no foul my friend.
