Heading to Austin labor day weekend for the game.  Not looking forward to the temps.  Praying that a random cool front blows through.  Who am I kidding.  Its going to be hotter than the sun.

I really think the shade from the eclipse is going to keep the temps down today.

Waiting for eclipse to pass so I can start egging supper; pork chops with some new rub I bought this Saturday. Store was having a party with about 8 cooks on BGE's using the rub on everything ... Tri-tip, ribs, chicken, corn, pork chops, fried rice, and I can't remember what else. Oh, and reading this thread from the beginning only on 14 of 704 tabs. It is entertaining.

@Legume - great call with the binocs.  Used 'em here in a 95% coverage area.

95% would've been better for sure.  I think we were maybe 70

The eclipse doesn't interest me in the slightest.  There, I said it.

Hopefully it lived up to the hype for those that are into it.

Red potato with butter and new rub in aluminum foil on MMX started before eclipse arrived here. Pork chops with new rub had been resting in refer since last evening until SWMBO insisted hers be put in ziplock bag with water and the rub.

Done. Pulled the potatoes from the egg and put in oven to wait for the chops to be done.

Took potato from oven, smashed and buttered, then poured liquid from the AF on the tater. Added beets and pork chops.

There will be ice cream later. Back to reading this thread, on tab 40 and still interesting but still in 2015 comments.

My wife picked up some Johnsonville Firecracker spicy sausage a few days ago that I was excited to try out. I'm always game for some heat. I tossed them in the mini for a quick little smoke.

I was hoping for some dynamite hot with them being "firecracker". It ended up being more like "sparklers". No real good heat. As almost everything labeled hot isn't. Descent meal overall. Pass on the firecracker sausages if your looking for some quick heat at your next meal.

Looks great I had them a few years ago but I haven't found them around me this year.

I've noticed recently that Johnsonville's styrofoam trays now match the curve of their sausages.  The Mothership needs to make a "Johnsonville Minimax Egg", with one side caved-in.
I'm drinking on a work night, never mind!  :look_at_the_time:

@Botch - work night drinking, just fine.  Work drinking, perhaps a whole 'other deal.  But I am definitely not one to further comment.  I need to focus on the styrofoam here.

Speaking of work drinking, WTH is going on with the Navy in SE Asia?

@DoubleEgger - I don't know anything more than you see in the press although I do subscribe to a few Navy specific feeds and there is nothing different being reported ( as you would expect).  I will not engage in the Monday morning quarterbacking deal but any time something like this happens many failed with the situational awareness.  Reads like the commercial ship was overtaking on the port side.
My condolences to those missing (likely dead) and their families.  Never should happen in peacetime and very infrequent in war.

Except for the grounding, the collisions seems to be fairly avoidable, since these commercial ships are fairly slow and everyone has radar and vectors on all the traffic in the vicinity.   And most of these navy ships are relatively quick and maneuverable (for their size).

With grounding - they have depth maps, but the seafloor in harbors, bays and rivers are dynamic.  That's why there's usually a pilot's association that guides foreign ships in these waterways, although I can see the Navy not allowing them on the ship.  Like lou said, situational awareness failure, but anything can be fixed, or mitigated.

Cap the autonomous vessels are cool.  60 Minutes had a really interesting bit.  They had a temporary crew on board as a backup, but will be removed soon, 10000 nautical miles on one tank, keeping a watchful eye on the diesel subs of Russia, China, NK.

Mini drones being dropped by 3 fighter jets, 104 of them swarming together.  Facial identification enemy tracking in urban settings, success rate of 9999 out of 10000.....really cool tool to aid in tracking multiple roads, locations, radar jamming.

Humans still pull the trigger/click the button, due to ethical standards, but they made it clear they could go full robot, arming them soon.

The bit was a clear message, let's whip it out for a second for all to envy, and reel it back in and button it up.  Autonomy is the way now, and into the future.  These tragic accidents will go by the wayside at some point.

@Focker Don't know anything about your above, but open ocean steaming is easy.  The challenges are when everyone converges toward the same harbor. And an autonomous rig tracking any submarine is beyond the technology that we even give ourselves credit for.  But I have been wrong before and will be again...
Edit:  Regarding speed of commercial ships-they are not making any $$  in transit.  They run at quite a high speed regardless of weather and visibility.  Load and off-load as quickly as possible are the drivers.
Just ask @northGAcock about his fog (weather) encounter last summer.
