Stay at home daddy/daughter date. She wanted to order Canes and watch Oppenheimer, so that’s what we are doing.
    You have a cool daughter!
Canes opened up in the last year within walking distance of my place.  I like their chicken and most sides, but WTF have they done to their "Texas Toast"?  It's like a slab of high-density polystyrene; how the hell do you screw up Texas Toast?!?
She is pretty cool once you get past the pre-teen hormonal episodes. I’m just happy she still has time for dad.

The movie was pretty good, I enjoyed it. My daughter started asking me a bunch of questions like how atomic bombs work. I had to tell her I’m not that smart, but, let me ask this guy on a BBQ forum, @JohnInCarolina, he knows everything.
Not sure I’d go so far as to say I know *everything* but I think I might be the person on the forum who has spent the most time at Los Alamos.

One thing I will share about the movie.  Just before it came out in the theaters, LANL employees were told that if they were asked any questions about it, they should only say “no comment”.
    Don’t be so humble.

I did work with bombs and explosives in my Navy days and she was shocked that I didn’t know how they worked. Way over my head baby girl. If I was smart, I would have been a firefighter.
I thought the only thing you needed to be a firefighter was a big enough hose.

At least, that is what my friends who are firefighters have told me…

JiC, do you have a CNWDI clearance?  I tried to send a PM but you're locked (and you don't have to answer).

You can still send PMs to protected accounts.  Anyone here can.  You just need to go and start a generic private message and then type that person’s handle into the address bar.

Regarding PM's, nothing has changed regarding account lock-downs or not and the "new" forum layout.  Just have at it as noted above.

Started incubating a batch of soaked and steamed glutinous rice for wine, the byproduct 'residue' is as precious as the wine. I'm too lazy to type  Google is your friend if you're curious

Just went to our local "International Auto Show"

Nice showing of cars...but a little underwhelming.  I would like to see the dealers roll out their top of the line stuff, but alas, no.  There were some Maclaren's, Lambos, Ferraris, Bentleys, etc....but those are all privately owned by local residents.  Audi brought no "S" cars.  Cadillac brought no "V" cars.  Ram did not bring the TRX, Etc.  I do like the looks of them dang Toyotas...TRD Pro with Bronze rims has captivated me.  I did not take pics as there are too many people to get anything good.   I still enjoyed it and look forward to the return of the International Auto Show in Detroit Jan-2025.

@lousubcap what are your thoughts about Hamilton and Ferrari?

My totally amateur comments:  Hamilton knows his racing days are numbered. He had a great run with Mercedes but their fortunes have fallen in the past couple of years.  No doubt that there is an allure with Ferrari.  That plus a chance to get championship number eight (He was screwed out of that in 2021) make a compelling case to move on.
Of course everyone is still chasing Red Bull and Verstappen.  We will soon see how the teams tweaked things during the break.
An article on the dominance of Verstappen last year:

Ya, it was a pretty crappy Jan here in Chicago so the egg stayed covered. It’s 47 here today so the egg is rolling.

  • Trying to diagnose a plumbing issue. A few weeks back, my son (guiltily) reported having sent a hard plastic, reusable straw down our main level shower drain. I tried to retrieve it at the time, but saw no sign of it. Today, our basement bathroom sink is backing up with all wastewater coming from the bathroom above. Good times.

The straw hung up in a pipe elbow. Toilet paper has wrapped itself around the straw and it is backing up the wastewater. You’ll probably have to call a plumber with a camera to determine the location of straw and have it removed.

Yep. Gonna try to troubleshoot a few things before getting the plumber in.

You might be able to snake it and break it up with a cheap drill powered snake. Or if you’re lucky there might be a clean out plug.

ive gotten stuff out of a tub drain with a shop vac before, slow drain filling the tub while using the shower drove me nuts. had the vac out for something thing else and just gave it a shot and it worked. shampoo cap was in an elbow maybe 10 feet away, was probably there for a decade before buying the house
