Quite an accomplishment, John. Congrats. However, if I’m honest, I must admit that I am just slightly disappointed you didn’t supervise “Pheremone Gradients Guide and Stabilize Polarity Sites for Mating in Saccharomryces cerevisiae,” which I can only assume translates to “picking up in bars - how I do it” in laymen’s terms.
@JohnInCarolina - I have to admit I had to look up Saccharomyces cerevisiae to try understanding what that was about.  @GrateEggspectations - think you were somewhat close, maybe two out of three. From Wikipedia "Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast (single-celled fungus microorganisms). The species has been instrumental in winemaking, baking, and brewing ...". Very cool that your student is going to an institution that had 3 Nobel Laureates.

Reminds me of finding torque wrenches wound way up that had been like that for months.  I don't regularly use one but have heard to unwind them (to zero) and other mechanics say wind them down to 20% of max.  Not sure what the current consensus is on that.

I learned an expensive valuable lesson with the torque wrench.  My gut told me I was wrong, but I did it anyway.  Spec called for in-lbs and the 1/2 in drive torque wrench I had was in the ft-lb range.  Whoops.  Cracked whatever I was cranking down.  I think it was something on an outboard motor.  I was young and ignant.
I have always split the difference and gone 10% of max.  I think main thing is not fully backed off and not fully cranked down.HeavyG said:

Nothing at the moment but I have 4 or 5 of those and I use them all the time
I liked to screw with the newbies at the shop and randomly zero the calipers .040" ish from closed.  Teaches a valuable lesson.  Zero those things every time you are measuring something that costs more than a half hour of your wages to reproduce.  Slide them closed, see that it says zero and then measure.  Know where you are starting from!
And after they learn that lesson, teach them to leave a slight gap when you close them.  Should never store them with the faces touching.

If one is really, really that concerned wouldn't they use a micrometer rather than a caliper anyway?
You can use mics and they definitely are more precise, but calipers hit the speed vs. accuracy ratio perfectly.
Especially if verniers with no stupid zeroing or battery.

When struggling with spalling in space based systems, we would simply put "no spall zone" on the drawing and the requirements document.  Worked every time.

Heartwarming photo, right there. One of the best I’ve seen in weeks. You look too young and too energized to be a grandparent!! Congrats on living the good life.
Thanks. That’s my daughter’s son, our first grandchild. She was 30 when he was born, I wasn’t when she arrived. 🤣.
People queued up to tell us we were too young. Still very happily married, as are both our kids. Daughter is a CFO and son is an officer In the RAF.  If only I could find the doubters now. But as we say over here ‘boll*cks to the lot of them’.
Congrats to you and your daughter.  I think the best thing to do with doubters, is ignore and live your life.  My wife and I got married very young and had kids before most of our friends had even quit partying.  20 years later, we are still together.

Awesome to hear. I am also a member card-carrying member of the married-young club - at least for my generation. Dated for six years as of my seventeenth birthday, fresh into university, and then married just after turning 23. Waited for kids until 30. Nearing 20 years together, we are still very happy and are still very much best friends. I still get excited for date nights, which are unfortunately much rarer in COVID times.

(Edit: Grandfather was RAF, btw. I should know more about him, but he passed before I was born, as did another grandfather, who spent a few years in POW camp.)

It has been a wild ride, not always easy, not always fun, but definitely entertaining.

The stories we share, and inside jokes are many.  One of my favorite memories is us scrounging around the apartment and finding enough change to afford Burger King.  We didn't have enough for Whopper Juniors, but had enough for two cheeseburgers, fries, and a soda.  Burger King was across the street and the dinning room was closed so we walked through the drive-thru for our date-night dinner.

100%. ^^^ This guy gets it.

I feel like that should also be the genesis story of your backyard reno. “Honey, I found change in the couch! Let’s go select patio stone!”

We will be having our 15th anniversary later this month and your story made me smile. Early in our marriage we would look through the truck, couch cushions and kids piggy bank to get a few tacos and burritos from Taco Bell. Great resiliency building times.

Final update on Cast Iron replacement project or as @kl8toncalled it ""Paying a lot of money for a project that you can't tell we did after completion - how I do it".

Spent most of the morning applying painter's tape to baseboards, door frame woodwork, a cabinet, an access panel, and protecting the newly installed tiles with a drop cloth in order to paint the closet. I put three coats on the the walls to insure the Orange Peel Texture I applied yesterday was completely covered.

While the last coat of paint was drying, I installed the LED Dimmer switch for the previously installed light. No flickering or buzzing while the switch is active so that is a good thing.

The switch arrived by @lousubcap's favorite 5 letter carrier this morning while I was painting:

Leviton used to sell cover plates in all six colors of switches they produced but that was a long time ago. They now supply only 3 -  White, Ivory, and light Almond. I chose Ivory. I can set the brightness by pushing the slide on the right side of the switch up or down. Once set I can turn off the switch during the day, then turn it on dusk and the setting has not changed.

One of the painted closet entrance door walls.

    The view from the doorway:

I was pleasantly surprised how well the cans of Orange Peel Texture worked to apply the texture. My neighbor told me several times how those cans did a horrible job for his project years ago. I did get tired arms from shaking the cans as vigorously as the instructions suggested and then holding the can to apply the spray in a circle for the required coverage on all three walls! But I think the closet work went surprisingly well.

I still have baseboards to install and paint and a new cabinet to replace the removed, redundant sink cabinet. I can them install the countertop that was attached to the two cabinets in the makeup area.

Meanwhile I am waiting for the plumber to reinstall the sink and toilet in the bathroom, next week. That is when this project will finally be complete, after I return all the various household items to the cabinets they formerly occupied.
