Doing Common Core math with my 2nd grader.  I understand the concept, but, the concept is stupid.
I just asked my wife (30 years teaching 2nd grade) about Common Core math.  After a lengthy explanation that I didn't understand at all, she pretty much said it's just stupid.
I can understand the fact that I think it is dumb because it is not how I was taught. They have these kids learning to subtract by adding and using a weird number line to show their work.
What you are probably describing is a concept called place value.  It's backed up by a good amount of pedagogical research.  Not stupid at all actually.  The fact is that the way most of us were taught math is what was stupid.

Probably the simplest example of this is for me to ask you to add $0.99 five times.  Like 0.99 + 0.99 + 0.99 + 0.99 + 0.99.  The way we were taught is to stack them all together and add the cents first, carry the tens, etc.  But that's actually slow.  The smart way is to add five dollars together, and then subtract a nickel, to arrive at $4.95.

I'm in trouble. Unboxed these yesterday and SWMBO saw them last night.

Her: What the hell. Did you buy those?
    Me: Yup
Her: I bought those for you for Christmas. They're in my closet
Me: You shouldn't have deviated from the list I gave you

That was the wrong thing to say. I'm still learning :)

The common core math is what I figured out on my own how to do it.  Some parents don't like it because it's different, and they are in that crowd at the little league, and there are all kinds in that crowd.

I think one of the problems with common core curriculum is how it's associated with the standardized testing, at a level that we make them functionally indistinguishable.  These were implemented together, and states opted in, most of them at least. Because so much focus is made on that testing, and at a very young age, much of the fun part of learning at ages where fun and learning need to be synonymous has been detrimental.  Let's just say every system can be improved.

But the attack on creating problem solving regarding math is a shame.  SHAME!

While I may only hold a lowly undergrad degree from a state university in east Texas, I understand the place value that JIC so eloquently explained. It breaks the problem down to simplest form. I get it. This is one problem:

These are the steps to complete the problem. While effective, I don't see it as efficient.

Correct. 21+42=63 is "fvckin efficient", if that was the problem. Add in the rest of the steps to the original problem, not "fvckin efficient."
But then again what do I know about efficiency.

I'm old enough to remember when it wasn't possible to learn how to speak/write proper English without having to diagram sentences.
They don't seem to teach that much these days (which I guess is why so many don't speak goodly nomore). Cuz we all know there really is only one way to educate our younguns their readin/ritin/rithmetic.

That's the way I've done math in my head for 50+ years. Just makes sense to me to round up then subtract back down.
