  • While I may only hold a lowly undergrad degree from a state university in east Texas, I understand the place value that JIC so eloquently explained. It breaks the problem down to simplest form. I get it. This is one problem:

    These are the steps to complete the problem. While effective, I don't see it as efficient.
    It's breaking down the process of how one can go about subtracting 379 from 442 quickly.  You bring both to the tens digit first, then the hundreds digit.

     Diagramming it out like that is just one way to illustrate the process, but once you master this approach it is very fast and you can do it in your head.

    And yes you could just teach a kid to use a calculator but studies have shown us that children who mostly learn with calculators don't actually understand place value and tend to be ... bad at math.

    I'd say Honey Baked is a racket if it wasn't so dang tasty.

    We sneaked below the radar last wee, so here goes again.

    This weekend I will be mostly eating smash burgers while watching the Premier League action.

    Wolves at Liverpool.  Fun and an away win.  1-2 the Reds

    Tomorrow I will be eating Burnt Ends while watching;
    Arsenal beating a stubborn Burnley, 2-0 in the end - both goals int he second half.
    The South Coast ‘derby’ will see Bournemouth rediscover their winning ways with a 2-1 against the dirty Seagulls
    Chelsea and Leicester could be fun, but the London boys will win, 2-1.
    Huddersfield welcome the new manager led Southampton.  Two weeks ago a bore fest, but this time the visitors will have enough and take a 1-0 back to Hampshire.
    Palace’s turn to lose 3-0 up at Man City.
    Newcastle have found their stride and will beat Fulham, just. Could be 3-2.  Probably won't be.
    West Ham are in prime for and Watford are hot and cold. However I am feeling a 2-2.

    Stoke will smash Millwall, at least 4-0.  Sorry @eoin

    Then, Ola Ole! the baby faced assassin is back to rescue poor under-dogs Man Utd from their own gluttony and sloth.  They will beat Cardiff and frankly I want to hear no more about them all season.

    On Sunday, Spurs will confront the mediocre Everton.  A 1-0 nil away win.

    And this is silly season with 4 games in 10 days.  Expect the last pair of games to be tepid miserable affairs played out by the injured, exhausted plus unknown players from the reserves.

    Ribeye.  Butts,  Tenderloin.  Plate setter.
    Other girls may try to take me away
    But you know, it's by your side I will stay

    @Botch  -- Nice!

    Yeah, I do have a couple racks for clamps.  I've been ribbed on a number of occasions when observed buying more clamps (you can never have too many).  However, there have been occasions where I've had almost all in use at once.

    Not a real serious OCD case as all the clamps are not hanging with the clamp open to precisely the same position. Quite nice and neat though for sure.
