NASCAR and the NFL

So we were sitting around the other day, watching football, drinking some craft brews while waiting for some ribs to finish on the egg when the remark was made that Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler reminded us of Kurt Bush... a ton of "potential" but..

That got us trying to pair up drivers with the NFL QB they most reminded us of...

Jimmy Johnson - Tom Brady ?

Denny Hamlin - Cam Newton ?

Joey Logano - Colin Kaepernick ?

Chad Knaus - Peyton Manning (I know Chad isn't a driver, but his focus and attention to detail makes this a no brainer for me)

Dale Jr. - ?

Denny Hamlin - ?

Brad Keselowski - ?

Others?

  • How about Jeff Gordon = Eli Manning, one or two really great runs, but mostly just can't seem to get it done.

Jeff is like an old war horse...  great in his day, and flashes of that now (like this past season)... maybe if Payton played 3-4 more years?

Didn't want to make this about the beer there are already two threads going about drinking... but we were drinking mostly local stuff from Alpine, Coronado, a growler from Green Flash and a few from Alesmith. We did have 4 different Abita brews in that tub also.

Jeff has 4 Championships and was close to winning 4+ more. Winning a single race is difficult for many drivers. Winning a Championship is even harder; especially since Jimmie arrived.

Many tracks have a 'Nascar Experience'. I've been to Pocono twice. They limit you to about 165 mph, but the thrill is still there. They make you follow a pace care.

Their thought is that if you want to go faster, you got to ante up more money.

You want a real thrill while you learn to go fast?  Then treat yourself to: Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving (http://www.bondurant.com/)

  • Maybe NASCAR pays its taxes the NFL doesn't per the IRS.
  • NFL makes 9 billion a year, and pays NO TAXES.

The 165 mph was top speed; not average. The first time it was 6 laps, 8 laps total, of learning. The cars are setup to go fast. The pace car controls the lap. As you turn into the corner you pick up the throttle and once past the apex; more throttle is given. The car is then allowed drift up toward the wall. About half way down the straight away ( this was at Pocono), you back off the accelerator to eventually set the car up for the upcoming corner. No brakes are needed or used when on the track. The only time the brakes are used is coming back on pit road.

They want drivers to stay between 2-4 car lengths behind the pace car. That was the tricky part the first time. Once you know where the pace car is getting back on the throttle its much easier to stay 2 car lengths behind at 165 mph.

It's a real thrill for sure. The first time I was out of breath after 8 laps. The second time, a year later, I stayed with the pace car like stink sh-t.  I never got more than 3/4 throttle.
