Bu-bye Gasser!

We are having our perimeter fencing replaced, along with 6 other neighbors. The back fence came down this morning. I used the opportunity to give my gas grill to a newlywed couple that lives behind me. Now, I have room for a table for my large BGE!

If it had a side burner, you might regret it. I'd sooner have a gasser and an egg in a nest than a table - just saying.

  • If you have electricity, an induction burner makes a great "side burner."

My gasser is storage so make sure your table has storage. Mini makes a good side burner too :)

I use my gasser for storage and I light my lump in a chimney on top of the side burner. Swmbo wants the thing gone.. I would rather have a challenger cart. If only I had a dime for every nickel I have. :)

I had the gasser and an Egg in a table for about a year after I got it.  And after that long with the gasser never even being fired up (and it had a side burner too), I sold it on CL.  Haven't missed it one iota, but love the extra patio space.

My gasser (with lava rocks) died about 25 years ago. Maybe longer. Been using charcoal ever since. Still miss the gasser.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I use my gasser for rotisserie cooking as well as other things like a quick cook of burgers.

  • I'm using my severely underemployed gasser for (1) storage (it holds the platesetter while I'm doing direct cooks, and it holds my raised grid or the standard grid when I'm not using them) and (2) cleaning my ps and grids (no need for high temp burn on egg, using up lump, etc., when I can fire up the gasser to burn off the gunk).

Anyone have more ideas on how to use a gas grill that has been replaced by the egg?

Haven't opened my gasser for over a year - a little worried about what's lurking inside.  It still performs important functions - place to lay stuff on, and surveillance platform for the cat (fluffy) to prevent hostile incursions while egging.image

I still use my gasser.  Mostly for hot tubbed beer brats during football season.  But it has it's times and is a nice compliment to the Egg.

I'm wondering how much my 20+ year old Weber might bring on the open market.  Doubt it would go very far towards a new Egg.  The propane bottles (especially the full one) are probably worth more than the Weber.

I'm thinking Ron's answer might be more appropriate.

My gasser is an overall nicer & bigger set-up than my egg.  So it does hold most of my BBQ utensils, my chunks of smoking wood, BBQ cleaning supplies, etc as well.  The only problem is they are located about 80 feet apart, so I have to grab what I want/need from the gasser and take it over to my egg when I'm egging.

hmmm, 80 feet away sounds like your BGE is a poor step child in your family. I hope when you entertain and serve great food off your egg that your fancy gasser doesn't get the credit! Or if it does then the person who fancies the gasser does the polishing of it to keep it "purdy" for company! LOL

I thought I would use my gasser more, but only used it maybe 5 times over the last three years.  Having company over and SWMBO said she's like to move the gasser off the deck, and I agreed.  Sold it two days later on CL for $95.  Bought it for $400 8 years ago, so I think it served it's purpose.  Induction side burner would be cool.  Have an induction cooktop in the kitchen, and it rocks.

Actually, the Egg is right outside from my kitchen under the patio cover where the sliding glass door is for access to the backyard.  My gasser is over in a side yard of the house where there is a brick patio and a 12 foot octagon gazebo.  I could actually throw a party in the back yard with the egg and my wife could throw another party in the side yard with the gasser.  although the outside dining table by the egg sits 4 while the granite table by the gasser sits 8.

My side burner is one of the propane ones like chefs use at the "omlettes to order" station.  Very hot, very fast, no electric needed.

LOL - the picture of that POS was taken about 13 years ago! I bet by now it is already part of some barbed wire fencing out West or part of your trunk bumper!

BTW if you don't believe me I happen to live near Bartonville, IL which is the home of Keystone Steel and Wire. If you ever have the chance to go through that plant from one end of metal scrap which is merely dumped on the ground to the other end of finished product you would be amazed at what goes in one end and comes out the other in the form of wire, fence, nails and various other products! My neighbor was the SVP of sales and I saw first hand the nitty-gritty manufacturing which amazed me!

@RRP - I thought most of your stuff had a 11yr life span. Your foil roll and thermapen are 11yrs old, did we witness something that was pre 2003??
I think 11 was the pattern but could have been 13, I can't remember. :D:D

LOL ! I bought my first two eggs in 2000 so that makes some of my recollections easier. Then I know the next year I bought a bunch of other eggcessories so that makes 13 years ago easy to recall and then in 2002 I started the gasket biz. Sorry if my memory linkage seems strange to you!

We've been in a heat wave here in SoCal for the last few days. Just below 100 the last 3 days cooling to the mid 80s today. My point being nothing gets cooked inside when it's like this. Tonight I cooked homemade mac and cheese. Boiled the water on the double side burner while I sauté the bacon and onions on the other burner all while my beef ribs were slow cooking on the XL. Once you get a quality gasser you don't just wheel them to the curb, you fix them. If you fire box cracked you wouldn't throw it away. I didn't get rid of my oven when I got a microwave. I didn't throw out my crock pot when I got a sous vide. Why would you fire up the BGE to color up something that come out of the SV that's only going to see the grill for 60 seconds a side? Bottom line IMHO it's just another tool in the tool box.
