Some of us are old enough to remember when the per gallon price couldn’t go above $0.999. You had to multiply by 2 to come up with how much you owed.

Yep I bought some gasahol in liters when I worked in Birmingham in 1980. It ate a hole in my Super Beetles fuel line.

Lucky!  When the USAF shipped this shiny new Lieutenant to Dayton OH in ‘83, I started using gasahol in my ‘71 Rustang, and it somehow destroyed my valve guides.  An expensive repair that had me eating peanut butter and ramen for months.   :|

Well that Beetle was always breaking down. A month earlier I went to lunch. The cable from my gas pedal to the throttle broke right by the Vulcan statue. I pulled over and tied the wire together with my shoe lace. Only 10 minutes late getting back.

When the AF moved me to Albuquerque, I bought a '77 VW Bus for $2,000.  Drove the piss out of that thing, hauling my instruments to gigs every weekend, work every day, and 1-2 ski days per week (the heater was just a suggestion, but you're in your ski suit so no problem).  Had to replace the clutch at one point, $850.  Dead battery in a level parking lot, I pushed it by myself as fast as I could, hopped into the seat, popped the clutch, and got Her running!  It's said that, with a pair of pliers and a coathanger, you could fix any problem on your VW!

The AF then decided to move me to Grand Forks, ND.  I decided a vehicle with a real heater would be a good thing, so I sold Her... for $2,000.  Wish I still had Her.

Interesting video on diesel vs gas, electric vs hybrid, and Mazda's upcoming Skyactiv Z vs their older Skyactiv X.  Video obviously produced by Mazda and AI-narrated, but was pretty interesting:

And yet over a fifth of all petroleum still has to go through the Straits of Hormuz. And what will the production cost of this synthetic fuel that they were talking about?  I would like to see the pollution cost from oil well to highway including the pollution created to make the electricity to make this fuel. Also I would like to see independent testing on the pollution created by Skyactive Z. I got bitten by the rosey promises on my VW diesel wagon purchased back in 2011. I had to eat a whole flock of crows after Diesel Gate.
