Murderous and delicious. 🐓 🍗 If God didn’t want us to eat chickens, he wouldn’t have made them from scrumptious meat.

Actually never saw a feathered one, but years ago when I was employed by a Chicago based bank there were two small, very hyper guys we called banty roosters. They would go toe to toe defending their department's after screw ups. And no, it wasn't for show - they really hated each other!JohnInCarolina said:Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -

It’s OK Ron for a brief moment we all got to hold on to the dream of @shtgunal3 raising cockfighters.RRP said:

Where is @SGH at lately? I’m sure he has a use for spent hens.

Had this pic on my phone. Can’t remember who sent it to me or where I got it. This ol’ lady is the epitome of every southern person’s Mamaw or older aunt. Lol Some of my fondest memories from childhood were spent punching out homemade biscuits with glass cups with my southern aunts, learning how to fry chicken, snapping peas, and family reunion potlucks.

I have had 3 roosters and none of them worked out. I kept drake for years, he was tolerable, mostly

My sister Beulah raised chickens for their beaks and bum holes. She made sharp and smelly chicken jewelry as a side hustle. After a while the smelly part wore off, but Beulah was smart enough not to tell her customers that.

Again - please excuse my stupidity...I just assumed all female chickens laid eggs and those who did not make the quota became Sunday dinner!shtgunal3 said:

Wait, what!? Chicken comes from the bird also called a chicken!?
That looks positively scrumptious.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

We raised 50. It is a fairly simple operation once you get set up.kl8ton said:Nice work! A very clean operation you ran! I know you posted about them earlier but how many did you raise? In the bush just East of Cambridge,Ontario -
I get them hours after they hatch, this batch were 7 weeks, 3 days. I keep them until they finish the feed I have on hand and process them the next day. At this time the males were 5-6 lbs. I have stopped them at 6 weeks before and also kept them longer - I have raised them to 10-12 lbs but you risk losing some at that sizeLangner91 said:How long from fuzz to frying pan? This is true, but the true "broiler" is bred to be big, fat and lazy so they grow much quicker. The downside is they can develop lag and heart issues if kept too long. It takes a lot longer and quite a bit more food to get an egg laying breed rooster to a decent size (but you can castrate them to help them fatten up)Again - please excuse my stupidity...I just assumed all female chickens laid eggs and those who did not make the quota became Sunday dinner! In the bush just East of Cambridge,Ontario -
How long does it take to butcher the chicken? From head flying to drumsticks frying?
-
A buddy of mine raised four dozen. On "Judgement Day", he took them to the local processor. He thought he would have to come back for them. Nope. They had a dozen traffic cones mounted upside down on a board. One chicken in each cone, and they instinctively stuck their heads out the bottom (Point end) of the cone. One whack with the knife and the chicken flopped in the cone and bled out. Then, they go through the plucker. He took them home in a box, ready to freeze.
He said he was surprised by two things. First, the speed of the operation, and second, by the way the executioner seemed to enjoy his job....Clinton, Iowa -
Wish we're allowed to raise chickens where we live. I know you were looking at getting a chamber sealer big enough to pack your chickens, did you get one?canuckland
